2000 Grand Marquis With Broke Speedometer

I still have not figured out why all the sudden my speedometer stopped working. Is there anything I can check before I change the speed control regulator. I talked to a mechanic and he said it should not be the speed control regulator because My Cruise Control still works. Before I change it, Is there any fuse or relay that might be out? My panel is not digital it is needle driven.

Is the Speedo cable connected at both ends? If so, it could be a bad cable....MB

Where IS it located on the other end. I checked by the speed control regualtor under the car and made sure it was secure. Where is the other end located.

I would check where it enters the Instrument Panel and the other end should be in the Transmission. Not sure on your year so get a GOOD manual to find out for certain...MB

Your speedometer runs on electric impulses recieved by the computer. There is no speedometer cable. Look in the Battery Junction Box (under the hood fuse panel) and check fuse number 8. This supplies current to the speedometer. Lewt us know. Good luck.

WAY2OLD is "dead on" (as usual)! I misread the post and thought you had a '90 and not 2000! There is NO Speedo Cable and he has told you to look in the proper place - let us know how it turns out!! MB

If the fuse is good their is a sending unit usually on the tailshaft which counts pulses as the drive shaft moves. Look for a broken wire or plug.

The speedometer in my 1995 Grand Marquis quit working. This thread did it form me. I replaced the 30 amp maxi fuse in the under hood fuse panel and now everything is working properly. Thanks.

I replaced a 30A breaker that was shorted out, I don't think it was for the speed/odometer. I also changed the speed sensor in the tail of the transmission. Neither one has fixed the speed/odometer, anyone have any other ideas?

Neither the speedometer nor the odometer are registering at all, the speedometer needle doesn't move and the odometer and trip counter don't increment.

If the wiring is good some times you have to get a junk yard instrument assembly. If you have the proper tool you can check for pulse at the connection to the instrument cluster. You can get a free scan at Auto Zone or Advanced and check for codes. But need a good scanner to go further.

I have a bluetooth scanner that I use with Torque Pro, the car wasn't showing any codes. I'm not sure how to check the wiring, need to research more how to get that done. I see used instrument assemblies on Ebay from $50 - 90, I'll probably go that route if the wiring checks out.

If you can find both ends you can use a couple gem clips and an ohm meter. You may need help to have someone else hold one end. You can use copper wire so the leads can get to each end.

I used Torque Pro and drove around the block, it showed the speed of the car. Does this mean the wiring is OK, I know that means the data is getting to the OBD, I assume that means the wiring is OK? Can anyone confirm if I am making an accurate assumption?
