Fixing Coolant Temp. Gauge...

I find it hard to believe that I cannot determine the temperature of my car engine because the temperature gauge on the dash does not work. So I need to know how to fix the problem that exist. Do anyone have an idea of the procedure and what the part I need?

I receive this photo somewhere in regards to location of the ECT sensor but before replacing the sensor I need the exact procedure?

Attached is a drawing showing the sensor location on the 3.8. It may be the same as your 3.1. If not, it should still help you in identifying the sending unit (sending unit, sensor, switch... all the same, just called differently). Do anybody have an exact photo?

That drawing does not show the 3800 or correct sensor locations as we know it today. It may be of the original 231 V6 that came out in the 70s or a small block V8 engine. Basically, it is worthless and doesn't help.

The ECT is located below the thermostat housing on the 3.1L VIN "J" engine lower intake manifold. Just follow the upper radiator hose. I see if I can post a pic later.

Thanks a lot...I was aware of the photo being an older model engine. However, it will real helpful if you can find me the actual photo and procedure in replacing my ECT sensor.

I prefer to come up underneath the exhaust manifold with a mini-ratchet, an extension connected to a pigtail, and another extension with a deep socket to get to the ECT.
Its a bit of contortionist act to do it but takes more time setting up the tool than it does to get at the ECT to disconnect its connector and unscrew it.

On the 3800 I remove the left engine dogbone mount and the bracket. After that it is a breeze. On the 3100 much easier than that.

Wow the pic is amazing!! Thanks BNaylor! Quick question. When replacing the ECT sensor, do I have to drain some of the coolant in the radiator before unscrewing the old one? Because I was told that some coolant may pour out when unscrewed. Also, do I have the put lube or solicone on the thread of the sensor then screw it in?

You're welcome. You could drain some out but really not necessary. Just make sure the engine is stone cold with no cooling system pressure. Try to use the AC Delco replacement ECT only and not an aftermarket brand. The threads are self sealing so it is not necessary to use any silicone and do not use plumber's teflon tape because it will interfere with the sensor ground. Good luck.
