There is a diapraghm under the battery tray, look for a torn boot or it could be defective. It is a common problem and is a dealer part only which goes for a hundred dollars.

Re: 97 4xr4 wont ingage

ok thank for the info, but here is something eles for you. on the drivers side up by the firewall i had a vacume hose that is not attached to anything and is sucking not blowing. it is about 4in. long with a tee in it. one of the hoses goes to the intake were the brake booster goes and the other hose goes around the back of the motor and goes down by the heater core. i dont think this is the problem but it could be cause i cant get me vents to change now. to bring you up to speed i just done the intake gaskets and the problem started after i got everything back together.

That vacuum line goes to the 4WD also and may just be your problem. If you need the actuator,
the Dorman part # is 600 102. Any auto parts store can order it. Autozone has it for $50.

Advance Auto has it for $42. http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...tNumber=600102

Re: 97 4xr4 wont ingage

Check your vacuum hoses. Make sure you can pull a vacuum on them. If not, replace any cracked or dry-rotted hoses. Check the vac actuator under the battery tray as described above. Disconnect the negative battery terminal for 1/2 hour. This should reset the x-fer case computer. When you push the buttons on the dash for 4WD, what do the lights do? Do you hear the motor on the transfer case try to engage the gear?
