1999 Emissions Box - Obsolete?

Hi All,

On a dark and stormy night, I go for pizza. I back into a parking space and back over a rock. Thinking just the gas tank was thumped, dealt with the weather, came back and drove home. The next day, my wife tells me of my rewards for going out and getting pizza, that a box was smashed and hanging down from the back of my '99 Taurus.

My mechanic, who told me to buy a Taurus because they are one of the easiest to work on and parts are cheap and readily available, said he won't be able to get to it until after the holidays, but orders the part.

During this time, I find the gas tanks takes about twenty-one minutes to fill becase the 'breather valve' has been taped up so dirt won't get in there. Another week goes by and root-canal surgery (not related).

The holidays come and go, come to find out, the part my mechanic orders, is the wrong one. There is no place for the breather and the bolt plate runs horizonal to the car, where the bolt plate on the car is perpendicular. He calls the Ford Dealership in Concord NH, who says they'll send him the only other one it could be for that model. When it comes in, my mechanic sees it's obviously too small and does not accommodate all the hoses.

He calls me and asks for my VIN. Dealership says the part (the emissions box) I'm looking for is an obsolete part.

* Is it true the emissions box can be obsolete within ten years?

* Besides local junk yards, is there any place I can get a replacement emissions box?

* Should I post my VIN in this thread?

Thank you in advanced

Click here and look for the vapor storage cannister. See if that is what you are wanting. Part number is CX-1671. Click on the info icon beside it and it shows a picture.

Sounds like a great beginning to a Country Music song

As far as your issue, you can check on car-parts.com and see if you can find a used one there.

Re: 1999 Emissions Box - Obsolete?

Hi All,

Thank you, Way2Old. I went to the site and it showed only one which looked to small for what was there originally. Also, under the car, there is an angle bracket the 'canister' mounts onto, which sits perpendicular to the bottom of the trunk.

The first canister my mechanic got had the mounting plate designed flush with the bottom of the trunk. There is nothing to bolt straight into, nor was there a place for the 'breather' hose to attach to.

Hi fdunford,

Yeah, when I get slide-guitar and percussion, I'll send you a copy... But seriously; Thanks, I'll check out the carparts.com link in a few.

Hi MWT47,

Thanks for the advice. When the snow melts in the Northeast, that might become an option.

If anyone else knows, please let me know.

Kindest regards.
