Who would win this?

Ok, 2 of my friends are planning on racing some day. One of them owns a 1989 Honda Accord EXi Coupe, the other a 1990 Toyota Corolla SR5 Coupe. I'm not sure on the stats of the Accord, I would think around 130hp/tq and about 2700 lbs? The SR5 has 103 hp/102 tq and weighs in at about 2250. Who do you think would win this? Both of them are new stick drivers, about the same skill level.

The SR5 cuz its engine is more suited to racing.

It depends on the the gearing and the distance they are racing.

If we're talking about a 1/4... it'd be close, but I'd put my money on the Toyota, because those the 4AG has a better powerband for the strip, and better gearing, from what I know.

On the highway, the Honda should have the advantage, more hp, weight is not so much of an issue, and the gearing is better suited to the highway.

I'm actually thinking that with those two cars and drivers, the Accord might have a better chance.

No wait! There's more to this than meets the eye.

Yes, the Accord is weightier, but think about where that weight it. Right over the drive wheels. With two rookie drivers they're going to be fighting for grip, probably thanks to high-rev clutch drops. The heavier nose of the Accord will weight the tires enough that they'll grip sooner, and the actually superior torque (weird to say, isn't it?) of the Accord will haul it away from the SR-5. Just look at one of the hot set ups for FF drag racers. They actually have gone to longitudinal mount engines with the engine well infront of the axle centerline, all in search of better weight bias for more grip. Sort of like the Opel Calibra DTM cars, minus the RWD half of the driveline.

Don't forget, Cbass. The SR-5's weren't the Twin-Cam. It was the GT-S models that got the 4AG. Plus, in 1990, they weren't FR anymore. Any advantage that a Hachi would have over that Accord was lost in about 1986.

I said that the Corolla wasn't FR. And everything I've ever been taught was that the GT-S was the Twin-Cam piece with the same engine as the 1st Gen MR-2's. While the SR-5's used an uprated version of the standard Corolla SOHC engine.

In fact, back on the AE86 model, couldn't you get carburetted SR-5's?

In any case, while I'd rather see the Corolla take it. (my dad actually used to club race a Corona coupe at Nelsons Ledges, and my Grandfather street raced Celica Supras, so I've got close ties to older Toyota products) the Accord looks like the smart bet.

The SR5 has the 4A-FE twin cam 16 valve. I'm not sure who would win, close call. The Accord has max horsepower/torque around 5500 I think whereas, the SR5 gets its max horsepower around 5500 but max torque around 3500. They are going to race this weekend I think, so we'll find out.

The accord will win, I own a 90 accord (same gen) and the torque will beat it off the line, even if the accord is auto and corolla stick. Once the speeds hit about 30 all the way up to about 90 will be the same, but after that the accord will start pulling away.... slowly.

I think the biggest issue is the skill of the drivers, and also some luck. Just for the hell of it I will put my $ on the accord. No reason at all just for the hell of it, b/c my friend has a 88 accord and I am a little biased. Let us know!
