Question Can ya help a newbie out? please?

Hello all. yes that lil sign on the left is true, Im a rice runner, but hear me out.

I've gotten pretty good with cars an engines, unfortunately specifically Hondas. My best friend has got a 98 Talon ESI N/A, and I guess my modification bug has rubbed off onto him. I've read the threads on this forum, but its not quite enough to where I would feel comfortable helping him out (I'd tell him get on line himself, but he's in his senior year of an engineering (civil) degree with a job, sooooo....)

no matter... advice, websites, manufacturers, etc etc that you may be able to suggest I and he would greatly appreciate it. Right now Im going by way of the Honda, I/H/E and suspension upgrade. But bang for the buck on talons Im sure is greatly different from Hondas.

He's got some coin saved up but is on a budget. Your opinions and advice are greatly appreciated, thank you.

Thanks all, I will certainly pass those sights on to my buddy...

while Im on here...are head swaps do-able on Talons, namely his? If its possible, I know on hondas its a great way to up displacement and all around HP and Torque.

I don't know of any heads that are interchangable with the Mitsubishi block. He is better off gettting the head reworked and cleaned up.

so a port and polish is the way to go on the Talon eh? What's that do to the potential for a turbo on that engine...SOL, or is it possible? Or after a P&P do you have to sleeve the cylinders and such to get away with it?
Whats the R/S ratio on these things anyway?

he's stoppin by this weekend and we're gonna build him a CAI and discuss possible engine upgrades.

Installing a CAI

So here's some pictures of my buddy's talon where we just installed a CAI, there'd be more specific pics, but the camera's batteries went dead.
here ya go...






first get the old stock airbox outa there! leave the tube from the throttle body, you'll need it!



here's another pic.



then get underneather the car, that lil' piece of the plastic shielding sticking out there, needs to go to make room for the filter.


cut that thing off! we found that later we needed to cut the bottom piece that is still there out also, you can use a small hand saw, or a good steak knife to cut through this, it was pretty easy, we used a hand saw and tin snips to clean it up, and later sanded the edges to make them smooth and clean.


Drop the tube and filter into the bay, and connect it to the OEM tubing. Don't tighten down yet, check all around to make sure you're not scraping any edges, wires, or the like. in this case the tube is one for a 92-95 honda/acura that we picked up at autozone for about $30. the filter you can't see is a cone filter ($25). if you need to cut the shielding more, shave it, or move some wires, (you shouldnt, but application vary) do it now.


Then have your moron buddy who doesnt know how to work on his own car tighten all the bolts and put in the mounting brackets that you bent to fit. The brackets come with the tube kit, you can bend them by hand, but we chose a torch and clamps to make sure they were bent right and clean. Use an old bolt from the stock box to attach the new brackets to the former inside of you OEM airbox.

Tighten all the clamps and bolts.

What we did next I have no pics of, sorry.
Get under the car, and there are 3 bolts holding the bumper assembly together, plastic-support. Take out the 3 on the side, one is near the fender, the other 2 are close together near where the bumber straightens out. Fabricate a piece of material, in this case we use light weight, very plyable, aluminum. This is to go under the filter and protect it from road debris. You'll see that you'll still get plenty of air through the bumber and from under the car, but this will protect the bottom and sides of the filter. use the bolts you took out from the bumper assembly, punch holes to fit in your fabricated shield, and reattach the bolts with the shield in place between the plastic bumper, and the metal support. This will hold your new shield in place quite well without having to drill anything. YOu can cut your shield to your standards, we just covered the front and side of the filter.

Adendum to the CAI

Just so you know, after putting on any new mod, you should check it frequently over the next few weeks. New things tend to shift, warp, and move when they are new and adjusting to a bumpy ride, heat, and other road conditions.

The moron buddy pictured above, didn't check his new intake very often. One day, after a nasty pot-hole, he heard a strange scrapping, checked under the car, and there was half of his intake dragging under the car.

Keep checking your mods until everything settles, keep tightening if necessary, double up mounting if the place you installed gets a rough ride, etc etc. Oi.

Just thought I'd add that for anyone new to mods.

ur most likely gonna want a Hahn Racecraft turbo kit (check www.nopionline.com) and definitely check out www.dsm.org, or www.vfaq.com. vfaq is an amazing resource for our cars. it has every question u could possibly think of answered and gives many step by step detailed instructions on modifying the car, even mods that will cost u no money.

Thanks Again

Hi all, just wanted to say thanks again for all your insight and helpful websites and such. I believe that this summer is going to be a mad craze of modifications for my friends and I. My Honda is getting a B16a2 swap, my friends Miata is getting a supercharger, suspension, and some exterior work, and my friend's Talon (who I started this thread for) is likely to see what ever is possible just shy of a turbo kit (too rich for his blood at the moment)

None the less, thanks again for all your help...it is greatly appreciated.
