There were two "phases" of the second gen cavaliers...

The second generation began in 1988. In 88 and 89, the Z24's still had the 2.8, but from 1990 through '94 the Z24 got a 3.1 liter V6, basically a stroke out version of the 2.8. So 1991-94 became the "Phase II" 2nd gen, while 1988-90 was the "Phase I".

My Phase 1 tops out at 112, with a 3 speed auto, 165,000 miles, original motor. I hate auto's.... I have a lot more speed left in the car.. but when I get to 112, if I try to push the gas down any farther it tries to jump down into the lower gear, and I redline.

I just have the standard model and it goes to 105...the spedo only goes to 100mph so im not really sure after that. It has a 2.2 liter. I know there is a 160hp turbo engine that is 2liter for 89,90 cavaliers. I want to get that engine for my car. Also does anyone know if i can get a 5 speed put in my cavalier?

If you have enough money anything is possible. Got one at work with a blown engine I can see if the owner wants to sell it.

Do it yourself!! I hope to do this project over the summer. It sounds pretty intense... but doing stuff is the only way to learn about your car.

I have a 1988 Z with a 5speed, all stock, no mods, and I've pegged it at 120mph. Was about 4800rpm. Gotta love 5 speed!

I'm still looking around for a junkyard that has all the parts I need. I estimate it will be a little under $1,000, but I'm still looking.

I have no guess as to the cost, but I'll bet that it's going to be a lot. Probably more than the car's worth. It's probably best just to look for another car with a manual tranny. Cavaliers aren't hard to come by. Especially the older models with the 2.8 and the 3.1 They're fairly cheap, even the one's in nice condition. You'd probably spend just as much buying anther car as you would spend for a tranny swap. Good luck dude.

PS if you can.... go for the 3.1. It's a lot stronger than the 2.8. If ytou want my opinion, the best year for 2nd gen Z's was 1990. I like the 2tone body style of the 88-90 Z's but the only year that style came with the 3.1 was 1990.

My moms Celebirty station wagon has a 3.1 v6, same that is in the Z-24 i do believe. Anyways i drove it today. It does 0-60mph in 11sec and burnsout too. My cavalier never does that usually. Check out my web site for more on this car and mine www.rcjon.com/carconnection I just updated it with a new article
