Question jetta classifications?

Hello, I'm new to the jetta board. I've just recently bought a 96 jetta-trek limited edition. I am looking to buy some after market parts for it, but I have one problem. I don't know the specifics of the car. Usually when you shop for parts, they will give you a list of what cars the part is for, ie. jettaIII/jettaII/A3/A4. My question is what category does my car fall under. I know that I have the 2.0 8v engine but that's about it. Can someone explain to me what the difference is between the different classifications, or what years apply to each or what ever. It would help me out a lot.
Thanks

Peace....

Your car is a mk3 Jetta, it's based on the a3 VAG platform, so it's called the a3 Jetta or the Jetta 3/III. The car is called Vento in europe btw.

mk1 - 1975 -> 1984. Based on the a1 platform.
mk2 - 1985 -> 1992. Based on the a2 platform.
mk3 - 1993 -> 1999. Based on the a3 platform. Your car.
mk4 - 1998 -> . Based on the a4 platform.

Hey, thanks for the quick response. That is very helpful. I don't know if it would have been in the owner's manual or not but my car didn't come with one.

Thanks again.

Peace out
