Realistctly how hard is it to get a R32 or R33 GT-S or GT-R in the U.S?

I am in the market for a new car. I currently own a 300ZX TT and love nissans especially turbo ones. I was considering buying a 240 and doing a SR20 swap on it. I however have always wanted a skyline. I am figuring this all pointless since i will probably learn that unless I bought one form motorex i will never be able to legally own and register a skyline. I was wondering what it takes to buy a R33 GT-S or a R32 GT-R
and legally register it in the U.S? Would i have to have it modified like the Motorex cars? Or because Motorex imports and brings them up to U.S standars could i use that they are signifigantly similar to a DOT registered car? I live in South Carolina if that maters and don't know what the laws or if they are even any different from national laws on the mater. I see seemingly nice 93-95 GT-S Skylines selling on ebay for around $8000. I would have around $14-16000 dollars on getting one. I was wondering also how a R33 GT-S compares to a R32 or R33 GT-R as far as performance potential goes. I would definately be interested in adding bigger turbo(s) intercoolers and the sort. How much power is the RB25DET or the RB26DETT internals good for? How hard are the cars to work on? The engine is very tight in my Z and has to come out to do almost anything to. Am i wasting my time researching this or is it possible? Should i just figure if i want a skyline here give motorex a call?
I am sure this question has been asked a million times and i tried to search but it apparently doesn't work at the moment.

Thanks
Shawn

The R33 series

R33 GTS has an rb20e sohc 2 litre
R33 GTS25 has an rb25de dohc 2.5 litre
R33 GTS25t has an rb25det dohc 2.5 turbo

It will cost you a good deal of money to make the GTS25t match the GTR in performance. If you have it you can get good hp out of them though the blocks are much weaker than the RB26DETT and will crack.

Well,
It's not a waste of time looking into this. Importing a Skyline of anysort is a huge huge hastle. Going into it you must realize that you are going to spend a good deal of money (Depending on what you want of course)

Now, on your budget, you would look into an R32 GTS-4. The reason for that is two-fold. First of all, it has ATTESSA, one of the things that makes a GTR what it is. Second of all, power to weight wise, tunability wise, I think it is better then your other optoins. Those being an R32 GTS-25t, R33 GTS-4, or R33 GTS-25t. There are two reasons I'd take an R32 gts4 over an R33. One is that the R32 is simply lighter and nimbler. The other is that the R32 has the RB20DET and the R33 has the RB25DE (I think...) Now getting more power out of the RB25DE would envolve more then tweaking the 20DET.

Anyhow, this is all my opinion. Others will tell you to get an R33 GTS-25t. In the end it's all up to you. But sense you are spending a good deal of money, do your reasearch and be sure of what you want to do.

I own both, trust me a GTR is the only car you want. There is a huge difference in the build quality of the 2 cars. Not just the engine, not just the ATTESSA, or the HICAS. Its a GTR for a reason

Well, it really depends on what you want out of the car. If you want performance and you can only spend 20k. don't get a Skyline. There are many alternatives that you can get in the states that will give you performance that that price.

But if you want the Skyline prestige, then get a 4 or a GTS or some sort.

Gonthrax,

Yeah, I understand that. Infact if I could not bring my GTR back, I would either buy a Supra TT, WRX, or 300ZX. I really like my GTSt, but for the money and the plate form of the car you would be better off with something else. This is for being in the states, not else where.

Better than here. -30C to -35C currently. Well, back to Texas in a week. I know Texas isn't much of a fun place but at least it isn't -30C in the winter...

Just Move To Japan! I did!

You may consider just moving to Japan!

Over here you can get a used skyline GT-R:

R34 for $50,000 - $32,000
R33 for $25,000 - $15,000
R32 for $18,000 - $6,000

The only problem I'm facing now is that the R33 and R32 GT-Rs are considdered "Yanki" cars or cars owned by punk kids. Its a real stigma over here. The R34s are still pricey enough where the kids don't own them. But you just don't see any adults driving R33s or R32 GT-Rs. I'm kind of apprehensive about buying an R33 as my neighbors and friends may banish me!

I've been eyeing the Toyota Alteza (Lexus IS 300). You can get a 3 year old Z model for under $10,000. They are nice, but man there is this Blue R33 GT-R I see everyday on the way to work. Man is it sweet!

Oh well. Decissions, decissions!

Al
