94 explorer transmition

After I was reading all about the transmtion here. I went to my ford and tried couple of things:
first my ford transmition start to to go from 1 st to 2 nd after 5 to 10 secong delay. then it picks up speed up to 80 mi/h. I did change the fluid. still the same thing. I took it to the mechanic he mentionned that my 2nd gear is dead that why my transmition sleeps from 1 st to 3 rd and he suggested rebuild transmition. now I took my car back after he quote me the price of $ 1600. I paid him the $50 for diagno.. and left. my question is since he mentioned that the second gear is dead. I went and started the car with the gear on the 2 nd the funny thing is I can drive on the 2 nd then switch manualy to D for a while before I get on the freeway then to (D) and I am good to go. I do not know what the problem is because if waht the mechanic said is true. then I shoold not ne abel to drive on 2 nd is that true ?

this machanic does only trans.. that why I took it to him. but I do not wants to take it to somebody else pay $50 and it's the same or different story. please help

You need to have a professional transmission shop pull the error codes from the tranny. The electronic/electrical trannys will post error codes for some errors. Sounds like you might have a bad solenoid but I'm no tranny expert but I can smell a rat and thats the mechanic that you have already taken it to.

Re: 94 explorer transmition

i just experienced the problem about a couple days ago, i to took it to a professional for my 94 explorer where it was diagnosed for free, they said it needs a rebuild. another mechanic said the same, i took it to my dealer where i bought it from, he gonna give me his mechanics price of 7 or 800 dollars and said hed help me out on the money, dealers arent so bad. what ive been doing to get by is give it gas until i hit 3000 rpm's let off until it gets down to 1000 rpm's then give it gas then itll be fine.

Re: 94 explorer transmition

Before replacing anything try some LUCAS transmission additive. I put it in mine and its been fine for a year. It sticks to the clutches and firms up shifts and stops slipping.
