2002 grand am wiper problem

my 20002 grand am has developed a wiper problem. it works fine on low or high speed but when in the internmediate(variable) setting the arms jerk and seem to want to stop at the far end of the wipe cycle. i was wondering if others had experienced this problem. i don't know if the cause is in the motor, switch or linkage assembly.

Re: 2002 grand am wiper problem

When was the last time you changed the blades ??

They only last about 6-7 months, then they'll start working improperly.

I guess you could have a mechanical issue, but that would require some inspecting(taking it apart) to find out.
I'd go with the cheap and easy blade fix first.

Re: 2002 grand am wiper problem

i am pretty sure its not the blades as i tried tilting the arms up away from the windsheild and the arms move exactly the same way without the blades touching the windshield. i have heard about a wiper control board and i wonder if it could be it but am not sure if its in the wiper motor assembly or located elsewhere.

Alright, then it could be your linkage is binding or needs some lubrication.
Here is a diagram on how to access the linkage parts.

Check that nothings bent and oil the pivit points and see if that helps.

Also check the connection on the motor, especialy the ground wire.

Hope that helps

Re: 2002 grand am wiper problem

i have already tried oiling the piviot points. i think i may have discovered the problem. after the car sat in the sun for a couple of days after a rainy spell they worked fine. i think water may be getting in somewhere its not suppose to(probably at the wiring plug in). i am going to see if i can waterproof it but i had problems getting into the area when i was oiling the piviot points. i had removed the caps and nuts but wasn't able to pop the arms off. any ideas on this, i don't think i can get a gear puller in there.

Yeah the link above should explain how to remove the arms.... but its prety simple!
Remove the caps, I'd suggest marking a registration mark on the shaft and arm with a sharpie, so you know where they go when installing them.

Then just use a panel tool or standard screw driver and lightly pry them up.

Re: 2002 grand am wiper problem

Usually a screwdriver will work. You have to bend the spring part so the blade is off the windshield, and at the same time push down so there's less tension on the splines. If you can't get it that way, a battery terminal puller works great. Put the nut on about 1 turn, and put the puller over it so it doesn't slip off the stud and damage the threads.
