Changing the Brakes

Okay so my brakes have started to squeal and I know that it's about time to change them, so how hard is it to replace them. I have only watched my dad do it I have never done it myself and would just like to know others input. Thanks everyone.

piece of cake. i just did mine and i think it took about 1/2 hour. jack it up, put jackstands under it, and pull the wheel off (dont forget to loosten the lugs before you jack it up). i believe you need a 14mm wrench to undo the 2 caliper bolts, then pull the calipers off (i just rested mine on top of my rotors). pull the pads off, pull the caliper pins out and apply the brake grease (they sell it in little packets at the autoparts store) to the pins. put the pins back in, put the new pads on, slide the caliper over the pads, put the bolts back in, put the wheel back on and hand tighten the lugs (might want to use anti-sieze on the lugs). lower the vehicle and torque the lugs down. some fluid might make its way out of the master cylinder, if it does just clean it up with some wd40 or else it may eat through any paint it gets on.

I did my fronts over a year ago and had some questions also...quite easy to do. See this thread regarding the retaining clips.

interesting, good info! the only things that ressembled clips on mine were integral with the brake pads themselves. mine is a 99 metro though. i guess it'd help if we knew what vehicle we were talking about.
