Absinthe in the US?
I have heard rumors that absinthe is going to be legalized in the US for the first time since 1912. I tried googling and did not find much on it. Saw the same thing on the Colbert Report
Has anyone else heard anything about this? Has anyone here tried it?

Re: Absinthe in the US?
overrated and burdened with its own myth.
It's a hard drink to mix because the flavour is so strong and if you're going to drink it to enjoy the flavour, you really don't need to get anything more than the 40% (usually red although some green varieties are 40%), especially seeing as that extra 30% is more often than not, added alcohol anyway. There are also too many variations of what you might call absinthe. They range from small batch, properly distilled stuff that is near enough made in the same way as it used to, to mass produced properly distilled, to herbal macerated stuff that is really pretty nasty. In short, if anyone ever offers you "proper" absinthe that they claim to not be "supermarket shit", be careful.

Re: Absinthe in the US?
^^So people who have the "shit not from the supermarket", did they make some sort of ghetto moonshine with LCD in it or what?

Re: Absinthe in the US?
it's not that.
it's more because even among the readily available ones, there are lots of differences. Distilling the stuff takes a lot of equipment and a lot of skill and it is also just as acceptable to make absinthe by soaking or otherwise infusing the oils from the herbs into alcohol. Distilling gives you the better drink. I can't think of any non-distilled ones that I've had bar a mild 30-35% one from Prague. On the other hand, I've got a bottle of 70% (distilled) that I would happily sip over lots of ice. If you're really desperate, I can get you a few small bottles to try...... Not that I condone smuggling of contraband.

Re: Absinthe in the US?
My friend brought back some that was 35-40% and the green kind. Tasted pretty crappy, and no hallucinations, but for some reason it did make us drunk faster

Re: Absinthe in the US?
I've had it heaps of times, my best mate is Czeck and he brought me back a bottle of the 70% top notch stuff last year.
A group of us went out to a Czeck restaurant last Saturday and I had one with the proper sugar cube melted into it too. Seriously - it's not that great. If you want to get pissed really, really quickly then drink a good scotch. If you want to hallucinate, drop a tab of acid. If you do both at once, the effect will be much more pleasant than drinking a bottle of Absinthe.

Re: Absinthe in the US?
I was just curious as to what it was and to clarify the rumors about it. I may try i eventually. As for drugs, they aren't for me, thanks.

Re: Absinthe in the US?
You can find absinthe in the us. About 4 years ago ex of mine went home to philadelphia and came back with 3 bottles she got from a liquor store. The guy who worked there didnt know what it was or anything he just knew it had always been there.
A few shots worth and you will feel pretty loopy. Personally I would stop after a few, you have a good feeling about everything. We decided we were going to get crazy and polish off one of the bottles in one sitting one night. Bad idea. Im not really sure what happened but I know we got sick because we both woke up on the bathroom floor naked and had puked in the toilet....fun times...

Re: Absinthe in the US?
92.7% of people who say they've had hallucinations after drinking absinthe have jut forgotten that it has a high alcohol content.
random percentage made up by me but you get the point. let's see you drink half a litre of vodka straight and not get any effects. that's not to mention that the hallucinagenic effect of wormwood oil has never been proven.

Re: Absinthe in the US?
I promise you, the only reason you're all so interested in Absinthe is because it's not readily available or legal in the US.
It's REALLY not that great.

Re: Absinthe in the US?
^Eh...true. Only with the hallucinogens is it even remotely worth it. w/o, taste is horrible IMO and ya need to down a few shots of something else first. Living in Italy can clear up your view on things. Pretty much anything that's not allowed or hard to get in the US.

Re: Absinthe in the US?
Americans always want what we can't have. If they bring it here, it will be a novelty for a while and then we'll abuse it just like everything else. BUT if the FDA allows Absinthe to be sold legally here with its reputation for hallucinogenic effects and I still can't buy a frickin dime bag without going into full covert ops mode, something is wrong. I almost wish they would just figure out how they'll make money on weed so they can legalize it, but then the prices will skyrocket.

Re: Absinthe in the US?
Wanting what you can't have isn't an American thing, it's a human thing.
For the Western Democratic Governments of the world to legalize weed would be akin to admitting they have made up propoganda and lies to justify their "war on drugs". Did you see in the news the Dutch want Cannabs legalised as a Medicine, and it has a good chance of happening? http://www.smh.com.au/news/world/dut...329369039.html
