Re: How to get a torque converter off a van
You have to remove the 3 torque converter bolts that hold it to the flexplate. To do that you have to rotate the engine until you see the bolt. Then support the engine and tranny with a jack, remove the driveshaft, unbolt the tranny and crossmember, slide it back, then the TC just slides out. Expect lots of fluid to come out... like several quarts.

Re: How to get a torque converter off a van
I can't get to the bolts there is normally a dust cover that you remove but this van has casting all around the trans. There is no access to the bolts I can see.

I believe you pull the starter and there's access through the hole

Thanks UncleBob, I will see if now I can fight this van again, now for the starter.

Re: How to get a torque converter off a van
Kinda puzzles me that a 96 has a full bellhousing on it. They had the 4L60E which should be the dust cover kind. But UncleBob is right.. .you pull the starter to get access to those bolts.

Thank you we are about to go out and take a look at it. I will be back on if that does not work.

Re: How to get a torque converter off a van
I probably should have been more specific, my data shows a diagram that suggests there is a removable cover, but the instructions mention pulling the starter to get to the bolts.
Unfortunately, this kind of conflict is common, and without being there and looking at it, I'm not sure which is which, but I assume if you say there's no removable cover, then there isn't
