Should I put gasket sealant on UIM gasket?
I just replaced LIM gasket on my 01 GT (because off oil leak on LIM bolts) and finished everything yesterday. This morning after I did an oil change and started my car. And guess that I didn't do a perfect job. There is a leak on the passenges between LIM & UIM. I was to replace the UIM plenum as well but was having problem separating the throttle body as the bolt/nut both spinning. I didn't see anything wrong with my old plenum so I put in the new UIM gasket and bolted up everything.
In light of the coolant leak, should I put gasket sealant on the UIM gasket? Or can I (without remove the fuel rails and all the other connections) just lossen the UIM bolts and just retighten the bolts again? I am looking for a simple solution as the weekend is coming to an end. |

What brand UIM gasket was this and what torque figure did you use?

Re: Should I put gasket sealant on UIM gasket?
After stopping by Walmart to pick up more Dexcool,10W-30 and RTV Red gasket maker (in case I needed it), my GP cooled down. The fuel rail is blocking 1 of UIM bolts so I removed everything and UIM is completely out of my car now. Having done it once and the disassembly is quick and under an hour.
I don't known the maker/brand of my UIM and I did not replace my UIM plenum and just use the new gasket. The gasket look identical and snap in the same way. I also don't have a torque wrench that measures INCH/pounds so I torque them by hand in many passes. The torque sequence is 9 5 1 3 7 (long bolt w/ stub) 10 6 2 4 8 the small leak was coming from the top of LIM coolant hole near the bolt #7. Can I use a bead of RTV red gasket maker around the 2 coolant holes? |

Re: Should I put gasket sealant on UIM gasket?
Since you have the UIM off I see no problems with using the hi-temp RTV sealant. But do yourself a favor and use an in-lb torque wrench. GM now recommends 11 ft-lbs/132 in-lbs since 2004. Old figure was 89 in-lbs.

Re: Should I put gasket sealant on UIM gasket?
Put everything back together and test driving the car and no more leak (so far).
Without using a torque wrench, I did the sequence in 5 or more passes and use just enough force off 2 fingers... Hopefully I don't have to pull it again. And Thanks, The "check engine light" came on after the 2nd restart during my road test. Found out that I forgot to connect the EGR wire plug... Family is pressing me to go out now and I will check out my car when we return home. Surprised to found out my radio retained its station preset after the negative terminal been disconnected more than a day. |
