Unhappy Fresh Air Induction Problem

Have an 02 WRX wagon that I enjoy but am getting frustrated about a problem. Am not particularly mechanically inclined (do my own work on my Vulcan, but that's about it) so can use advice.

On fresh air and while idling at a stop there is frequently an exhaust smell that is getting into the car. It occurs when warmed up, whether I'm alone or not, and varies from slight to pretty noticeable depending on wind, temperature and humidity.

The local mechanic and Subaru tech. all blow me off saying that there are no complaints of this and that it is probably normal. Needless to say that is convincing me that Subaru makes a pretty crappy product and figures that poor service doesn't matter.

Any ideas where to look for a problem that may be small, chronic, and not appearing to affect performance (that at least is noticed by the service tech.)?

On an all-stock setup? How many miles?

Re: Fresh Air Induction Problem

Windows up or down.

Air on recirc or fresh air from outside?

Have you noticed a different exhaust pitch indicating an exhaust leak.

Check the seals around the rear lid for damage or crimping.

Re: Fresh Air Induction Problem

Fresh Air, windows up. Slightly deeper exhaust note. The mechanic says he checked for exhaust leaks (now I'm thinking: "yeah . . . right").

If I have to check things myself, and knowing that I'm a complete tyro with cars, what do I look for - how will even a small leak show up if I have to get under the hood?

Re: Fresh Air Induction Problem

You don't need to get "under the hood", you will need to get under the car.

First sign will be black 'soot' along the tunnel which looks out of place, most exhaust leaks occur on the exhaust underside where condensation accumulates - look carefully for this.
Also check around flanges for any indications of gasket blow out.

The fact your exhaust note has got louder is a clear indicator of an exhaust leak.
Fact that you're on fresh air could indicate the leak is in the front end of the system.

Re: Fresh Air Induction Problem - Update

Problem solved. It was not an exhaust problem, directly.

The PCV 1/2" hose was disconnected from its ferrule on the intake manifold. Not easily seen as it is under the intercooler.
