Loose Gear Shift Lever

I have an '87 GM and have noticed that the gear shift lever is VERY LOOSE. It goes into every gear ok but there is massive play towards me and away from me. Is there a spring or gear that needs to be replaced? MB

Hey miamibob. My pictures show there is a spring behind the shift lever to the inside of the column. All I can say for sure is to take one apart and see what is there.

my 90 does the same thing but i think the pin that holds it in on mine is warn. so it goes up and down alot but works fine otherwise.

Thanks guys - you are the BEST!! This is one of those projects I may get to when it gets a little cooler down here (South East Florida). Since the shifter works it's not a massive rush.....MB
