water leaking in the car

i just noticed that the floorboards are soaked. its not comming from outside water, but from just under the air conditioning area, right above the hump. it seems to not be pouring out from under the car like it did. is there an drain hose or something in there that could have come loose?

Re: water leaking in the car

Have you noticed if your engine coolant is getting low? Located above the hump is your heater core. If it is leaking it leaks into the car or out the little drain plug on the firewall in the engine compartment.

It would help to post the year/trim level of the car, as it's not in your profile either.

Re: water leaking in the car

Well with my blower problem not shutting off and until we can get the module I have to unplug my blower from under the glove box. And yesterday when I unplugged the blower it released about 1/4 cup of water right unto the floor. I haven't been back out there yet to see if more water is there, but you might want to check the blower. Now can anyone tell me how the water got into the blower?

Re: water leaking in the car

Possibly the heater core is leaking or it's coming in thru the windshield seal. Does the radiator level stay constant?

As far as I know the levels are staying the same. I will pay closer attention the radiator levels and I will let you know

Re: water leaking in the car

Firetbabe, your blower staying on is a blower module issue ( I assume it's the 04 in your signature), it's shorted due to the water. Your water may be a blocked Evaporator core drain tube. The 97-03's had a cowl seal issue that allowed water to get in, but I'm pretty sure GM addressed this issue whith the re-design in 04.

This thread is getting a little off from the OP (who still hasn't replied) so I'm monitoring it to make sure it keeps on the original topic and doesn't get to convoluted and confusing. If you reply, make sure you address the person you're answering, or quote them in your answer to avoid confusion.

Thanks

Re: water leaking in the car

Rich,

Firetbabe has a thread addressing his particular issue including the water intrusion problem. So all replies should be limited to that one thread and not across multiple threads which may have no bearing on the issue or year/model of Grand Prix. Like you said it causes confusion and redundant replies.

I saw that Bob, after replying here.

As a note to others reading this thread, replies addressed to firetbabe should be entered in the thread that Bob linked, not this one. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Re: water leaking in the car

ohh yeah its a 93' grand prix le 3.1 liter. its not the heater core, anyways i don't think so, dosen't smell like antifreeze and the car dosen't overheat. i was reading in the manual for the car and has something about the evaporator drain plug. i'm not an expert on this , but isn't the evaporater outside the car.

Re: water leaking in the car

The Heater core and Evaperator are located in same little box above the hump. They share the same drain. Jack the car up and place it on jack stands. Crawl under and just above the powersteering rack you should see a small rubber elbow sticking out the firewall. Thats the drain. It may be clogged.

Re: water leaking in the car

My son's 98 GP GT had this problem. If it doesn't smell sweet then it is not coolant.

There is a drain in the center of the firewall just behind the engine, it looks like a about a 3/4" hole in the steel, this is the drain. It is a little difficult to see but is about at the same level as the rear bank exhaust manifold in the center. It is easier to feel it than see it. I first blew an air hose into it to clear it and then put a wet vac on it tightly to suck it clean. He hasn't had a leak since.

Re: water leaking in the car

well i took advise from both of you (shadownfl and freekie) and cleaned out the elbow drain cleaned it and opened up the plastic case that surrounds the heater core and blew shop air thru it and then closed the case up and started the car with the air running and it started to drain out the drain elbow so it seems that it got clogged but i am gonna leave the plastic covers off and look for leaks and make sure its draining.
thanks for the help and i will keep u posted after a week to see if it got the job done!

Re: water leaking in the car

Some new info.

Yesterday my son's GP blower motor died. He had needed to wiggle the wires from time to time for a couple of months to get it to work and now we know why. It turns out that the connector into the control module is burnt and the blower motor is badly rusted.

Most likely the water in the air box caused the motor to bog down and pull more current that normal. He has had the common problem of water leaking from the airbox when it rained. I discovered that it was a clogged drain and unclogged it but it seems to have clogged back up (probably the person who owned it before him never cleaned the airbox or drain). Over time the water would rise in the airbox and only leak when it hit a certain level, but since there was water almost continually in the airbox the blower cage would encounter resistance while moving through it and thus overload the motor.

We now need to replace the blower motor ($113) and control module ($103),his GP has climate control. I am hoping that the harness connector into the module is not too badly damaged since the dealer has no P/N for it and will be difficult to replace. I may need to find one in a junk yard and splice it into the harness.

I would advise to also periodically pour about a cup of water with a few tablespoons of bleach added into the air intake at the windshield. This will keep the mildew in check and hopefully keep it from clogging the drain.

Re: water leaking in the car

thats some good info. but it seems that it is still leaking. dose the air box have a gasket for it. when i had opened it up the other day it had alot of water still in it. is that normal? also at the end of the drain elbow on the firewall has a duckbill valve on it, when i removed it the duckbill valve was melted open. would this cause it to not drain properly or is just for debris or bugs not to enter?
