Mercedes McLaren SLR Convertible (WIP)

Hi everyone,

I am currently trying to make the SLR Convertible, which concept SLR was originally intended to be. But due to who knows what, they produced the Coupe version instead.

McLaren just stopped the production of Coupe SLR, and replaced it with the Convertible, maybe because the Coupe SLR does not sell as well as they thought it would.

I really liked the Convertible better. I think it has better lines, and based on the review, the driving experience is more rewarding than the coupe.

I was almost done building the Coupe version, but I never really liked it, and decided to rebuild and cut the roof.

I painted it with TS-42, and made the headlights to resemble 722 SLR

The only thing I liked about it was just the interior, so I will keep that.

The project:

Roof is gone.

Re: Mercedes McLaren SLR Convertible (WIP)

I noticed that SLR convertible still has the same gull wing doors. At first, I thought that it would mean trouble, because I didn't think that the coupe and convertible would have the exact same mechanism. But, after some research, I found out that the mechanism is exactly the same.

Notice the hinge.

What an eyecandy....

So here goes:

I reshaped the front lip to make it thicker and closer to the ground (it's pretty subtle really).

The styrene is the blueprint for the top.

Interior shot.

I stole that nail shaper from who else.... LOL! It's hard to find sanding sticks here, but it works great anyway...

Re: Mercedes McLaren SLR Convertible (WIP)

i'll be watching this one, the black wheels look great, and the removal of the top makes this cars shape appeal more to me. Good luck with the rest of the build...

Re: Mercedes McLaren SLR Convertible (WIP)

Depending on how this turns out, and how easy you make it look, I might pick up a second SLR kit to build a 'vert out of it!

Cool idea. Will the door hinges mechanism still work on the model with the roof cut off?

Re: Mercedes McLaren SLR Convertible (WIP)

Nice work so far on a good idea! You must be brave to scalp an SLR! It definitely looks hot, so I wish you all kind of luck to continue! Really waiting for it to be finished! What color do you plan for the exterior?

No, not the rollhoops, it's where the convertible top is stored.

The rollbars are almost done. I will try to post pics later (still at work now LOL)

As for the exterior color, I'm thinking of solid gloss german grey.

Ah, the toneau and the toneau cover, I gotcha.

Regardless, I'm really enjoying this build a lot
