roof water leak

has anyone had a problem with water leaking into the vehicle? When it rains I get water dripping from the headliner near the info center in the center of the headliner (near the Onstar button) and from the front of the headliner directly in front of the passenger seat. I have checked the roof carrier holes, the windshield and the rear hatch openings and have found nowhere that water could be getting in. I'm stumped!

Hey Beermandtk,

I have a 2001 Venture and occasionally get a water leak into the drivers foot well soaking the floor mat when we get a really bad rain (has only happened twice in 7 years) which I think is from the cowling getting plugged with pine needles. Your problem sounds like a roof rack issue, have you checked all of the mounting points not just the ones closest to the front? Once water gets inside it can run an amazingly long distance before it actually drips off and soaks the headliner.

The other thing to check is your On-Star antenna, mine is mounted over the driver and a leak there could cause a similar issue to what you are seeing especially if it is running along the antenna wire.

I've taken the roof rack off and RTV'd each hole (I was pretty sure it was not coming from these hole after taking the racks off - looked like they were pretty well sealed, but put sealer in each hole anyway) and i have looked all over the Windshield molding and on-star antenna (no signs at all of where water could get in). All other ideas are welcome.

I've had the same problem with my 98 Venture. The windshield sealant right above the rear view mirror lets loose. I fixed my by using windshield sealant from any parts store. Just pull back the head liner a little and squeeze some in. I did this to my Ventue 2 years ago and its leak free.

This is a common problem in these vans. I had a big leak almost in the center-top of the windshield. Notice there was a small rust spot there as well. Some members report a bad or deteriorating seal, some say they discovered the leak was a result of the roof top carrier. Here are some links that might give better insight into the problem:

easy fix go and buy a small tube of neoprene [the stuff that they put the windshields in with. now where the foof and the windshield molding meet on the top of the van. put a bead all the way across and come down on each side about one inch but you have to leave a grove for the water to go by on each side as there is a drain valley on each side. this will stop the water from going in underneath the windshield molding and on the inide of the windshield. them gm products you got to luv 'em goes you can't do anything else with 'emrunaround

What doesit mean when you said you RTV'd every whole. I need to seal the wholes for the roof rack and I am trying to figure out how to do that.
