Anybody collect FLY 1/32 Slot Cars?

I've just discovered these. These aren't kits to build, but they are surprisingly quite detailed. I had thought many times of starting to collect 1/43 models, but the detail just wasn't good enough for me. Then I found these slot cars of all things that are surprisingly well detailed.

I just bought my first - a Porsche 917 from the film "LeMans" and will be getting the other two Porsche 908s from the Steve McQueen collection before getting others.

I just looked some up on eBay, and... Holy Crap! Those things look awesome. I'm semi-familiar with the Scalextric 1/32 slot cars, but those FLY cars are incredible!!!

Is 1/32 the standard slot-car scale? Do you have a track for them, George?

(Hmm... Do slot cars go with models or R/C cars?)

That was my reaction! I was totally blown away.

BTW, that was how I discovered them - I stumbled upon them on eBay.

There are two popular sizes: 1/32 and 1/24. The 1/24 was the standard for some time and still is when you talk about state of the art, but the 1/24 slot cars don't even resemble real cars anymore and haven't for 25 years or more. I used to have a 1/24 25 years ago.

The 1/32 have become popular in the last 15-20 years from what I understand (I've been out of it for 20 years). I heard 15 years ago that 1/32 was coming back precisely because they were much more accurate and actually looked like cars. Now of course, FLY has taken it to a whole new level. Just bloody outstanding.

No I don't. I plan on being strictly a collector. The quality is so good, I'm buying them strictly for display. I may eventually buy slightly used ones to race at some point or probably more likely, to let my kids race them when they get old enough (and when I have kids finally ). When that time comes, I'll probably have to buy a track, or more likely, build one. One of my passions is woodworking and I could build a killer track pretty easily.

Good question. They don't really fit either place. They certainly are far different from R/C, but they don't quite fit the models section since you don't actually build them.

I think the "other" scale I had in mind when I asked if 1/32 is standard is the scale of the "toy" slot car sets made by TYCO and whoever else. You know those crazy sets with loops and jumps and track that goes up the side of the wall? I always wanted one of those sets. Anyways, I think those are HO scale; a scale most common for model railroading. The ratio is 1/87. Where they got that number...

Also, I recall that there was a short lived slot-car store & track near my parents' house. They had three separate 1/32 layouts; the largest had six lanes, IIRC. You could bring your own car or rent one. I never had one, and I only remember being there once. Shoulda' paid more attention...

Dude.....those little suckers are awesome.
Makes a change from the other scales.

I can remember having a 1/24 scale slot car set. It's still in my garage in a box.

P.S. Welcome along George !!! .....we need some of us oldies to show these "wiper-snapers" a thing or too :finger: :finger: :finger:

Yeah, HO is quite popular. Technically they are a slot car, but usually when saying "slot car" people are refering to the larger cars. HO cars are usually simply refered to as HO cars.

I still have a ton of track from my youth. Sadly I have no cars anymore. I used to beat the crap out of my HO cars. A childhood neighbor of mine had a couple of cars that are now worth a few hundred dollars. I hope he still has them. They are quite rare today.

I love models. I used to be decent at making them, but never great. I used to highly modify most of the kits I made or even built them out of parts in the numerous boxes of spare parts I had.

I always wanted to build cars from scratch, but when I was building models I never quite had the patience. Now that I do, I simply don't have the time.

Yeah, I'm blown away by them. Since my interest in cars has always started with racing, I just love these. Their selection of classic race cars is awesome.

Thanks.

I'm mightily impressed with what I've seen here. Wish I had the time to build them. But, that time is spent either building race cars or road cars, or doing woodworking.

Well this is true in most cases, but there is alot of ceativity that goes on to get the liveries that just aren`t available from the manufacturers 1/32 scale i`m refering to. and the modeling goes far past just the cars, as model rail-roading, we go to some extremes to make realistic race coarses in our basements/garages. this hobby is a fast growing pastime for us "old kids".
here are a couple links to some slot boards if your curious ! These forums are strickly devoted to the "HOME 1/32 RACER" be it plastic or routed tracks.

It's ok to bring up old threads when you add something that cool to it..

Those 2 tracks are AWESOME! Very nice work on the cars too.
