I've always had good luck w/ paasche, a good airbrush should last you forever, so buying the cheapest one possible isn't always a good idea...

Re: starter airbrush?

You need to get a compressor if you want an airbrush (either of those shown), your $ will be better spent with the Paasche though.

Re: starter airbrush?

Look on ebay, or harbor freight for the paasche air brush. You can pick up the blister pack set for like $20, though it only comes with a #3 needle set, which is really all I ever use in mine.

Re: starter airbrush?

Don't bother with a 'starter' airbrush- it's a waste of time and money. You're much better off getting a good airbrush that you'll be using for years/decades.

Get yourself a dual action, preferably gravity feed model. Paasche, Badger and Iwata all make excellent airbrushes. Check out Dixieart.com. But a cheapie 'starter' airbrush will frustrate the hell out of you. It will never do well what you bought it for.

You will need a compressor. It's possible to get by for a bit with propellant cans, but they are truely terrible. It's inevitable- you will need a compressor.

Re: starter airbrush?

I have a great beginners airbrush. The kit comes complete with paint jar, compressed air thingy and it works brilliantly, it also has a great adaptor that you can attatch to a car/bike tire for air.

Its made by badger, and thats all i know

Re: starter airbrush?

I thought the same as you are thinking now and I regret it.
I got a 20$ AB with cans, sure it beat the hell outta brushing but mucked up pretty quick and made me get a better one. I would like the add to the list of manifactures, in saying that Tamiya AB's (which are actually made by Iwata IIRC) are cheap and have last me a long time. But AB's are one of those :you get what you pay for, things.

Re: starter airbrush?

Ditto to all comments about getting a real airbrush setup; get a good airbrush and a good air source. You pay more for those cans of compressed air anyway. If you can't afford a good airbrush, stick to Tamiya spray cans until you can afford a good airbrush. I got a good dual action airbrush as my first; it wasn't hard to learn how to use, perhaps it was easier since it had much more control than the cheapies.

"Cheap airbrush" should never be spoken in the same sentence. Any airbrush can be a beginner airbrush. Make it a good one.

Best "first airbrush" advice I have seen so far on AF. Can it made a "stickie" and posted in the FAQ section?

Re: starter airbrush?

You might have to pay $150 for an airbrush and compressor, but it'll last you for twenty years so...$7.50 a year isn't bad
