What do you think?

Conserving space is what led me to this idea. I just wanted to share my display case, it is from ikea. The thing is it wouldn't fit in the wall, so i had to cut it back 4 inches. The glass shelves were also cut back by my close friend Phil. I still have to put in two more shelves and it will be complete. The front glass doesn't sit flush against the wall because then it would not be able to open. I got the idea from Hiroboy, hopefully its not copyrighted! Let me know what you guys think.

Nice and neat looking - if you finish all those models aside it though where will you put them?

Re: What do you think?

Hey, I was looking at that same Ikea display case yesterday! I like it, though I wouldn't want the lowest shelf to be quite that low. OT: Wow, you have both the Zender w201 Benz AND the 7'er BMW! And what is that Revell BMW kit above the yellow M3?

I can see an e36 B6 below the M3, but is the Revell e30 above the M3 an Alpina as well? It looks more like a Kamei badge on the box.

Re: What do you think?

mind telling us roughly what it cost? I've been looking for one of the same, but the nearest IKEA is about a 2 hr drive from me, so I have to make it count!

Re: What do you think?

I've seen that case at Ikea, and I like it too. I think it also comes in black.

Are there any neat ways you could light each shelf separately? Models need a lot of light; I've been known to hand visitors a flashlight, so they can see the detail!

Be nice to have small, unobtrusive lights on the bottom of each shelf. Maybe something that's battery powered, so you wouldn't have obnoxious plugs and wires running all over the place.

Of course, the perfect lighting "color" is like daylight: not too yellow/red like household tungsten bulbs, and not cold blue like those solar garden lights.

Re: What do you think?

Looks good! Ikea tends to come up with nice display cabinets like this from time to time.

I believe they come in three finishes, white, light tan and black. They cost around 120 dollars with tax. I also believe you have to put these in the outside walls of the home, as the inner walls are two small in width. I had to cut mine back.

Looks good. I have the same unit in my dining room, but just mounted directly to the wall (not recessed into the wall or cut back like yours). It does stick out a bit (7.5" deep), but since it's tucked away towards the corner of the room, it looks ok.

I'll try to post up a pic of mine later. Here's a link to the product page at Ikea for those interested. As MidMazar stated, they come in 3 finishes, but apparently only 2 are available online. http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/38047210

Re: What do you think?

I have the same shelf too. Its well worth its price, for storing finished models.
