not shifting into overdrive

I have a 1995 grand prix se 3.1L engine.
I've had my car repaired at a mechanic and was not doing this prior to taking it there. The mechanic had the car there for about 5 days and they finally found out was was wrong with it. I'm not sure if any of the tests they ran on it effected it any or not? But i get it back and now the car won't shift into overdrive. I took it back to the mechanic and they believe it's the neutral safty switch. They say the part is $150 and they are going to charge me $25 dollars for replaceing it so a total of $175. I was wondering if anyone knew if it was easy to fix it or not. I dont know if the part is on the transmission or on the engine? or if anyone knows where the cheapest place I could find one is?? Like a transmission place or a junkyard?? Any info would be great
thanx,
Jerry

Re: not shifting into overdrive

Jerry most Thingamahjiggers, and Thingamahbobs can be found at Autozone.

Online they will have various manuals and part location guides and they will show you what it looks like.

Bet on it costing half the 125 and at 25 to install shouldnt be to hard.Unless they threw in the install cause they knew they were getting 125 for a 6 dollar part.

Might have to Slide under but you should do it at least once a year anyway to have a look see

Good Luck , Dwayne

Re: not shifting into overdrive

What did you originally take it in for? If you had him repair a radiator hose, then nothing he did could have affected it. If he replaced the transmission fluid then maybe it is their fault.

I also highly doubt its the neutral safety switch. That only prevents you from starting the car in gear... it shouldn't have anything to do with overdrive.
