I use either BMF foil or silver paint from Tamiya X-11 marker, although the latter is completely not resistant to touch.

Ales, I tried the X-11 using airbrush and I didnt get the kind of shine I was looking for. It's more like metallic color with visible flakes.

Do you have better luck with it?

I'm talking about the X-11 paint from the Tamiya marker. And I just use a paintbrush for that. Also Plasti-Lote should have chrome paint, I've never used that, but Guiddy has and swears by it.

Has anyone tried Alcad?? I've only heard good things, other than price, about it.

Alclad is the best way to get a true chrome look finish from a paint.
For more information on it, go to www.alclad2.com and it is available for purchase from www.squadron.com
ModelMaster makes metalizer paints too, but their chrome is not as good as the Alclad stuff.

Alclad II chrome is the one that gets recommended the most. You'll need to spray it over a gloss black enamel surface.

For an alternative, you can try the many chrome metalizers offered by automotive lacquer companies like Plastikote, Duplicolor. It's a pretty good match, if not exactly.

thanx for the reps. i was thinking of using those automotive chrome paints, but i wasn't certain cause it might melt the plastic. so will it? heard 'bout alclad too, but it's somewhat expensive. is it really worth it though? well, i've tried that tamiya maker imo it seems too grainy and it still doesn't look right.

daggerlee,

what do you mean? "You'll need to spray it over a gloss black enamel surface." so you mean if i painted a car red i have to spray black over the area i'm planning to chrome?

Alclad chrome metalizer requires an undercoat of gloss black to get the brilliance out of the chrome.
If you look at the alclad link I posted above there is a full description of how to use it there, as well as examples of what it will look like when finished.

Re: best chrome paint?

Hi all,

Is it possible to use chrome paint on aluminum? If so please give me some suggestions. I'm looking for the right balance between quality and cost. It would also be good if there was enough paint per can or whatever to cover a lot of surface area.

Thanks!

David H.

Alclad should do the trick for you.

Re: best chrome paint?

This stuff is awesome and better than alclad, although it isn't a paint.
Take note of the warning though if you are a bit ham fisted.

i bought one of those in M model shop in singapore.. its damn good, damn easy to apply, tho it produces a darker shade of chrome than alclad.. but then its FREAKISHLY fragile as u cannot touch it AT ALL coz once its touched, the surface gives out this ungly finger print and so much of the chromed is stripped away
