2001 Gp Se Radio / CD install

My CD player is Toast as E20 when the car is warm. I had enough and I want to put my other cd player in it's place. I know there is a harness to buy so my steering controls work and I know the code for the factory radio so if I had to put it back in I guess there should be no problems. Right !

1. Is there any surprises that I could get when installing my cd player. What I mean by surprises is weird issues with other functions of the car or things not working. Anyone had problems ?

2. Is the wiring striaght forward ? I have installed before but never with theftlock issues or maybe it does not matter. Is there a link to any wiring diagrams / colours of wires etc.

Idk about the surprises but I know the parts are gonna run you about $150+ (at Bestbuy, gonna be about the same at other places probably too, also assuming you still have the stock radio in). It's also another $50 to get it installed there so if you really aren't sure you want to do it I think it would be worth it to just let them do it since your already gonna be in $150. Just my 2 cents.

So I I'm guessing that I should expect something to Screw up when if I put in an aftermarket cd or does it generally go smooth. Just wondering as I have to travel throughout the week and don't need my car immobilized because of a problem.

I dont think the harness will be near 150.00 unless he has the bose system (do you?). Installing an aftermarket radio is pretty straight forward and should go easy. The factory one DOES NOT need to be reloacted so you shouldnt have any problems there. The brand of steering controls interface you buy depends on the aftermarket deck you have and if it can support it or not. Wal-mart sells just the install kits without steering controlls that will work just fin in your car for less than 20. I would search ebay. May be able to pick up an interface for 40 bucks.

I don't mean JUST the wiring harness would be $150, I'm talking all the parts. The wires for the steering controls and all that is $100 alone (was for my deck atleast, an Alpine CDE-9852). Then you have the thing to make it fit (forget what it's called), the wiring harness, and the antenna wire thing since they are different sizes on the stock cd player and aftermarket decks.

No I don't have the bose system.

I should state that I am new to this type of installation so if questions seem stupid, that's why.

From what I understand I will have to buy a deck that has a female jack in the back to support my wiring harness for the steering control. When I buy a deck, what is it called so I can get the right one.

Are you thinking I am keeping the exisitng radio as I am ripping that sucker out and installing a new deck.

Some GM cars use the radio as an interface for the digital info center and the old radio has to be relocated and left hooked up in order to use these features. That is what Tblake was referring to, and your car isn't one of these. The dash installation kit (to adapt the typical Din-size aftermarket radio into the Din-1.5 size hole in your dash) runs about $10-$15. The wiring harness (so you don't have to cut the wires under the dash) will run about $15. The interface to retain your steering wheel controls runs about $50 on e-bay. These work with any aftermarket radio that has a infrared remote. The only thing you will lose is the radio data displaying on the heads-up display if you have it (most SE's don't).

I just had excellent luck installing an aftermarket stereo into my GP GTP. I have a 2000 with factory Bose and no Onstar.

To get a nice flush look, I used the Metra 99-3300 install kit, It ran $20 at the local stereo shop. It is labled for the 95-96 Chevy Cavalier, but provided a flush mount to the dash. I had to drill one hole to screw in the kit. It went great. I\M me for pics!

To interface the factory amp and speakers which I kept, I used the Scosche SLC-4, it ran $20 at Wal-Mart. It was a simple speaker wire to input and output to harness. Just don't forget to hook the Pink wire to the blue amp turn -on on the aftermarket deck. The Pink wire is the one in the small plug from the back of the OE Radio it turns on the amp.

To keep the steering wheel controls, I used the PAC SWI-X interface. It runs about $50-$60 on ebay. With some simple programming and installing a small LED, the steering wheel controls work!! The only loss is the radio display in the HUD. But its no big deal to me. You have to have a radio with a remote to use this kit!

I installed an Alpine head unit, the display went out on my factory unit. The sound quality is still Bose quality and I'm loving having an auxilary input for my Mp3!

It is possible to have a nice replacement stereo!!

sorry to be bringing back a dead thread, but i love that look! only reason i havent installed an aftermarket deck is because i didnt want it sticking out like a sore thumb, i didnt realize they made flush mounts :| i must buy one asap.

Which year GP's require the head unit to be relocated? I want to install an aftermarket deck in my 98 GT however I don't want the whole thing to turn into a cluster F##k

I think only 2004 and later models. Your 2003 should be just fine.
