Deservedly famous

With publicity being so easy to come by these days, and so many celebs filling the tabloids with no other achievement than their bed-hopping exploits, what constitutes real fame in the 21st century? Are there any famous people left who truly deserve the title? Or have all the fameworthy things been done, and the achievers gone forever?

I think there are definatly celebs out there who deserve the title of fame, sure there are some who havent been in the spotlight with a movie lately but that doesnt always matter. Take Mel Gibson, hes a great actor who really hasnt had to many flops at the box office... well, none that i can think of anyways. He stared in great movies like The Patriot and Braveheart. Hes married and has been for quite some time. this brings me to a point, if someone is famous, they should marry someone who isnt because two famous people equal squabbles for some odd reason. anywho, hes also got a great family and hasnt hardly been in the tabloids at all. if anyone deserves the title of fame, it is Mel Gibson my friend. and thus an answer, yes there are people who do deserve the title of fame.

I beg to differ. Mel Gibson is an actor. All that he has achieved is to pretend to be someone else.I am asking if there will ever be any more people of the calibre of Sir Edmund Hilary, Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Donald Campbell,Neil Armstrong..........

These to me are great people, worthy of fame for their achievements. The fact that you choose an entertainer as worthy of fame shows [in my opinion anyway],just how little distinction there is thesedays between celebrity and fame.

sorry, i assumed that when you said celebs and bed-hopping exploits, i figured you were talking about hollywood, in which case i still believe if that is what you meant, mel would be on the list. But as for scientific fame and people such as freud and newton, i dont know, i suppose seeing as cancer is being studied more in depth as well as AIDs there could be someone who discovers the antibody or gene pattern or what have you that could cure these problems. Or there may be a great discovery in the world of science in the near future as well as a break through in the medical field that could revolutionize things we presently know. However i think the main reason this hasnt happened yet is because people arent doing things by themselves anymore persay. Newton and Galileo were great because no one else wanted to believe what they did, because everyone else was so used to what was fed to them. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said "To be great its to be misunderstood" there just arent any people who are misunderstood it seems like, they all follow a pattern and no one wants to think different. I dont know if what im saying makes any sense, it hardly makes sense to me even, which really isnt the best thing to say but oh well. Im sorry for the misinterpretation of your first post.

ilike2drivecars is right, nobody works alone anymore. one mans achievement is a group achievement and the group is hidden behind a company name. no one person can truly aford to make great accomplishments. no one person is smart enough to make great accomplishments. with the amount of technology we have now a days it is almost impossiple to be a renaissance man anymore. besides all the greatest thinkers are already working for the government and nothing they accomplish will ever be publicly known.
