Speedometer quit working 98 grand prix
Got a 98 grand prix v6 3800 series automatic. Went to go to the store and the speedometer did not work also the car I got has it so your speed shows on your window well that stays at zero to while you drive. Looking for ideas to fix it or what might be wrong. Checked all fues just to make sure and all are good. No problems shifting shifts around 3,000 rpms gauge and digtial read on window do not work. any help would be great.

Re: Speedometer quit working 98 grand prix
Check the speed sensor in the transmission. It sounds like it is either disconnected or has gone bad. You will need to get a book to find out the exact location but I would suspect that this could be your problem.

I agree with Lynn. Good place to start. See pic below for location of VSS which is the passenger (right) side of the autotransaxle extension.

Re: Speedometer quit working 98 grand prix
Hey I belive I found it its on the passanger side about six inchs to the left of the oil if your under the car. If this is right the plug with the wires looks like the bottom of the plug is orange and has a yellow and I think its suppose to be red wire going in to it. I do have a question any esay ideas to get it out. it looks like the ones I have found on the net and they all have that metal flange for mouting it. Also is there any other things that would have caused it to stop working I am tring not to take it in to have it looked at then fixed kind of tight on money and every one is telling me try the sensor since 50 for the sensor is cheaper then a 100 for looking then the sensor and labor. If i put a new one in and it does not fix the problem then I am stuck with it. Just looking for other ideas to try before the sensor cause I had to order the sensor in. Well I will keep you posted.
