IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 17 -- Since 1989, the Mazda Miata has proven year after year that big things do indeed come in small packages, and now, Miata lovers can actually build that package themselves with a Custom Miata Order program.

The custom car-building initiative was opened to the public today via the Internet in conjunction with participating Mazda dealers. It allows consumers to custom build their ideal Miata at www.mazdausa.com/miata/customorder and submit order requests.

Through October 15, 2001, or until production availability limits are reached (600 vehicles in any color combination during Oct./Nov. production), the Custom Order Miata program allows consumers to order a 2002 Miata in any combination that Mazda builds-based on personal preferences. In addition, Mazda is offering the 2002 Miata in two new colors-Vivid Yellow and Laser Blue Mica-the same colors currently available on the hot-selling Mazda Protege5 and Mazda MP3 respectively.

In responding to overwhelming affection for the Miata, Mazda has answered a strong consumer groundswell for the ability to custom build the prized roadsters, including a demand for increased variation in special colors by implementing the unique online program. Advance notice and pre-order exclusivity were offered to Miata Owners Club members in the days leading up to Tuesday's public debut of the program.

After configuring their Custom Order Miata online, consumers will visit a participating Mazda dealer to negotiate price, submit a deposit and complete the order process, which will conclude with delivery of the vehicle in approximately 14-18 weeks.
