Power Steering Fluid specs for 99 Explorer,Tranny fluid?
The tech at an oil change place told me the specs for Power Steering Fluid on a 99 Explorer call for Tranny fluid. Seeing as I just had the power steering flushed out at another place last week I just wanted to make sure of this before I ask the other place to reflush and fill with spec tranny fluid.
Can power steering fluid hurt the pump? Tks, Joe |

Do you happen to have the owner's manual? If so, see what they say in there. I can check the service manual tonight, but I suspect others will know the answer off the top of their heads before I get home.

Unfortunately I do not have the service manual. I can probably call Ford's or check elsewhere. Just wondered what others knew of this.

Re: Power Steering Fluid specs for 99 Explorer,Tranny fluid?
The factory service manual calls for Motorcraft Mercon Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) for the power steering system.
Are you sure that the place that flushed the power steering system did not use tranny fluid? I'm not sure the liklihood of damage due to using power steering fluid rather than ATF. I'd suspect that the addititives are likely different between the two and therefore seals could be damaged if left in for a long time. I doubt significant damage would be done in a week or two of time, unless you start to notice a new power steering system leak that wasn't there before. -Rod |

I'm not 100% sure that they didn't use tranny, but the fluid is clear and not red.
Thanks for looking that up for me Rod. Much appreciated, I will look into it. |

Go here and click on maintenance tab and then click owners manual. Enter your information and you can download the manual or print it out. Someone had added power steering fluid to your vehicle. It will not hurt anything as it is the same weight oil as the transmission fluid. The transmission fluid may give the steering a smoother feel, but you really have to look and feel for it to notice any difference.

Re: Power Steering Fluid specs for 99 Explorer,Tranny fluid?
Took the Explorer back to the service manager and he swears up and down that they don't use ATF anymore and that the power steering fluid is what the standard is today.
I have trusted this guy for years on other stuff. He never steers me wrong.(pun intended). |
