Two quick question --egr and bolts

Hi...

My '89 Grand Marquis has been hard to start with a rough idle. My mechanic suggested I change out the dist cap and rotor, clean the throttle body and replace the gasket. Now I'm working on the EGR valve.

I just purchased the Wells EGR valve unit which came with two rubber rings (one ring shaped and the other is wider and flatter) and a gasket. Both rubber pieced stack, but I'm not sure if I use both. The original piece had only one ring (the ring shaped one) on it. Advice?

Also, as a female I'm not going to have the strength most guys have, so how do I know if I've tightened a bolt enough. Obviously, if it leaks there's a problem, but I'd like to do this as professional as possible, so is there a rule or something? (I've heard of torque guides... Though I've never actually seen anyone use one.)

I appreciate any help you can send my way.

Ta! Shelby

Re: Two quick question --egr and bolts

The rubber seals are for the sensor that bolts to the top of the EGR valve. Remove the sensor and use the same style seal that comes off the old one. As far as tightening the bolts, if you get them where they are very hard to pull anymore, they will be tight enough. Also on the sensor holding nuts, these break fairly easily. So on those just pull till they are firely in place. The seal will help keep it where is is supposed to be. Good luck.
