I have allergies and I need some advice

Hey all. In the past couple weeks I have taken on quite an allergic reaction to something, pollen I am guessing. I work outside all day and it follows me home and I just have been feeling like shit all god damn day. The last few days its been annoying but bearable. Today pushed me over the edge and now I really need to do something about it. My eyes are itchy and watery, I sneeze a lot, and my nose is running like a faucet and also itches quite bad. The top of my throat is scratchy and my ears have that deep down itch if anyone knows what I am talking about. I have been taking Benadryl which has been working pretty well until today. This is all sort of a catch 22 if you know what I mean because if I do take the Bendadryl I am tired and groggy all day and I do pretty much nothing but sleep when I am not at work but if I dont take the Benadryl then I am sneezing and feeling like total shit all day. Its funny, on allergy medicine commercials they always say "allergy sufferer" and I always thought that people just needed to man up and quit bitching. Now I realize its just not that easy, I have never felt shittier in my entire life

So who else has allergies to pollen and shit? What do you guys take? Like I said, the Benadryl has been working ok but being tired all the time sucks and today it didnt work so well so I was in a sleepy haze all day for nothing. I dont really know what else to try. Is Allegra any good? What about Claritin? What about perscriptions, are there any of those? Anyway, if anyone could help a brotha out I would be much appreciative, I cant sleep my summer away or spend it it sneezing convulsions. Thanks yall.

Re: I have allergies and I need some advice

claritin, dont need a Rx and it works good, totally non-drowsy

they also have several anti-histamine formulas out there (look next to benadryl at the pharmacy), but claritin works for my family

Re: I have allergies and I need some advice

Ok, I am way too lazy to read all that... So I'm goin off a hunch that you have allergy problems and want suggestions... One that always worked for me was to drink lots and lots of water. For some reason it helped cut down on the sneezing and such. I always would take this stuff... I can't remember what it was called. lol Started with an E I think and it was a tiny white pill. Worked wonders...

Claritin, on the daily... and the water helps keep your body from being dehydrated, so it can flush itself of allergens...

I have had the exact same problem but only in the last 5 or 6 days, I've sneezed more in the last few days than I have in my entire life. I haven't taken anything but maybe I should. The funny thing is, is that I never have this problem... never, until now. The worst thing is the scratchyy eyes.

Claritin really works, but it gave me nose-bleeds because it dried my nose up so much lol.

Re: I have allergies and I need some advice

I have extremely bad allergies, pollen based, here in San Diego. Nothing over-the-shelf works for me though, sadly. Not Claritin, Benadryl, nothing. I'm on a homeopathic course that has done me wonders in the past. It knocks out the allergies for about 7-8 months, beforeI need another medical course. Without the homeopathic meds, I'd have allergy attacks every 1.5 months, just like clockwork, all year round, including winters.

Re: I have allergies and I need some advice

I'm working for a company that specializes in air purification and shit, and I have some suggestions for you that don't involve taking medications.

1. Change the bag in your vacuum
2. Vacuum your whole fucking house, including furniture and dust everything
3. Vacuum your mattress (just do it) and wash your bedding
4. Keep your windows closed

Do all of that and it should make your allergies less severe...atleast while your at home. While your working try the medications people are suggesting.

Re: I have allergies and I need some advice

Dustin I have really bad allergies too, and I've been getting them every spring for the past 8 or so years, my dad has it really bad also. We both take Claritin and then have some nasal spray and some special eyedrops that seem to work really well. Maybe you should take a trip to the doctor and see what they can do for you if the OTC stuff doesn't work.

My son has environmental allergies and our PCP gave him Clarinex Reditabs and they work great.
They had a report on our local news that this has been the worst allergy season in many years and those who usually aren't affected are feeling it this year. My wife had allergies a few years ago and I spoke with our PCP and our pharmacist and they both said it is not uncommon to develop allergies later in life (she was in her mid 30s at the time and never had allergies up until then,)even if you never had them before. They said they are seeing more, older patients developing allergies later in life. The pharmacist even said that the simple act of grilling with a grill can bring on an allergic episode, something about the smoke or fumes, (don't know if he was referring to charcoal,or propane grilling , or both.)

One more thing to add to the list that our local news that ran a story the other day was " Don't dry your clothes outside." You run the risk of pollen getting into your clothes while they hang on the line and then you bring that into your house.
