Has anyone tried using the polishing adapters for dremel tools as buffers/polishers instead of rubbing out a finish by hand? I was thinking about this because I am about to start a 1/12 scale Monogram `69 Z28, black no less, and I am dreading having to rub this entire thing out by hand. It is huge! Anyone ever given any thought to a small electric buffer for our cars? Maybe I will try making one and marketing it.
Also, anyone know where I can get a bulk supply of Tamiya compound for this? Or is there any automotive compouds that work just as well? I tried 3M fine cut rubbing compound, but it leaves more noticeable scratches than the Tamiya stuff. :licker: :silly2: :silly2: :silly2: :licker: :licker: :alien2: |

I think dremels have a Polishing kit, one of which is probably a really soft clothhead...
I tried supergluing some soft fabric to the head of my electric toothbrush once :o Didn't quite work out

A dremel has a minimum speed of 5K rpm, way to fast for any paint polishing. Polishers for real cars generally run at 1200-1500 rpm and they have a very large surface to dissipate the heat. Even at 1K rpm a small polishing buff like on a dremel would generate far too much heat.
Sand between every coat with 1500 or 2000 grit clothes and your final coat will be pretty darn pretty requiring little polishing. Many folks on here seem to love the Tamiya paints, maybe it's time to try them? If not, I'd go with DupliColor modified laquer paint as it goes on thin, has excellent coverage, polishes brilliantly, and is easy to use. AND DO A THREAD ON THE CAMARO!!!

Thanks Murco. I only ever used a dremel once, but speed was one of my concerns. I was thinking about taking one apart and connecting a variable resistor to it so I could control the speed. We`ll see.
I will probably use DupliColor. You are right about the way that stuff works. I like that even better than the Tamiya paints. Look at my thread on the `41 Willy`s. I did that with all Duplicolor, and I think I am going to try to use them whenever I can. And I `ll definitely do a thread on the Camaro. ![]() Nice Iroc. Is that yours? I have an `85 I am trying to sell. |

definitely dont use the dremel as a polishing tool for plastics. Thats one of the things i learned the hard way. ruined a s2000 model i made. i've read somewhere on this forum of a person using a nail polishing kit. from what i remember, those kits have lower rpms that would be ideal for polishing car bodies. dont know where to get them but at least its a starting point for some research. good luck
