Transmission Woes?
Ok guys, I have a 97 Grand Prix GT. I was driving home and I came to a stop light. When I went to take off, I heard a very unpleasant snap proceeded by grinding and started rolling backwards (was on a hill). I put it in park, and the park pawl engaged and started grinding as if I had put it in park while rolling.
Now, I have no forward or reverse (just thumping and grinding), and park doesnt hold the car. I had something similar happen in a previous car, and it turned out to be a busted axle. What are the chances of it being the same thing? Anything else I should look for, or should I be preparing for a rebuild

Re: Transmission Woes?
yes, it could be a busted axle. That is easy enought to check for, just climb under and take a look. Its funny that the transmission wont hold the car in park since in PARK you manualy enguage the pawl into a lug. I am just not sure if park does enguage and you have a busted axle, if the car will roll. I cant picture where the park mechenism is in relation to the final drive.
You may have also messed up the spider gears in your final drive. Like you said, i would check for a busted axel first.
