engine light issue???

fuelled up my 2002 Astro AWD the other day and the check engine light came on right after. Checked in the owner manual and it said that if the light came on right after fuelling that there is a possibility that it is the gas cap that is not installed correctly. I took off the gas cap and re-installed it, light still on. So I went to my local GM dealer where the tech looked at my gas cap and said that the gasket was cracked and I needed a new gas cap. $25 later I had a new gas cap on my van and the light was still on. The tech told me that it would take a couple of day for the code to erase since the computer did a self check every so many key strokes. Well, its been a week now and the light is still on, anyone have any ideas. Should I have it plugged in for codes, wait a couple more days or just disconnect the battery to erase the codes on the computer?????? The van seems to run great and does not seem to use more gas than usual.

Re: engine light issue???

I'm a bit surprised that the dealer did not clear the code, or at least turn off the MIL.

You can disconnect the battery or pull the PCM fuses. The battery is easier, and gives you an excuse to clean the terminals.

Re: engine light issue???

get the code checked, could be something different and the timing was just a coincidence. Autozone and other parts chains will read the code for you.

if you have a Harbor Freight tool store near you they have an OBDII code reader that will clear the codes also on slae for $39.00

Re: engine light issue???

Finally got the codes pulled out of the van. Came up as P1345 crankshaft position sensor / camshaft position sensor correllation. I was told that the camshaft sensor is in the distributor, is it possible that the sensor is dirty and sending this code. We cleared the code and the light went out, the minute I restarted the engine the code came back as pending and about 5 minutes later the check engine light came back on with the same code. Any one have any ideas??? Should I replace cap and rotor to solve this problem or should I go deaper? Other than the engine light on, the van runs great, hasn't even affected my fuel economy.

Thanks for any help!

Re: engine light issue???

more likely the crankshaft sensor, it can get pretty dirty. try pulling the connector and cleaning it first. any problems with slow start or long cranking times or does it start on the first revolution of the engine?

Re: engine light issue???

Starts right up on the first rev, like I said, if the engine light wasn't on I would not know that there was any problem. starts fine, runs fine, fuel economy is normal, power is normal. I was thinking of popping the distributor cap off this week end to see if anything needs replacing.

Where is the crank sensor??? Wouldn't the van not start if this sensor was not reading correctly???

Thanks for any help!
