Engine compatibility per year
First I would like to say hi to everyone.....
I have had my metro for about a month now and Im really loving the 47mpg it gets.. My metro is a 95 model with the 1.0 3cyl...It runs like a top now...But I would like to have a spare engine on hand before they are all gone. What year engines are compatable with my 95..?? I have found one out of a suzuki swift that sez 89-95..?? Where would be a good place to buy a nice japanese take out..?? Thanks.. |

You know, it would be nice if someone in the know would publish here a list
of what year Geo metros have exchangeable components - on a separate thread labeled "Parts Interchangeabilty by Model and Year" I believe that '90's thru '94's are parts exhangeable, but am not sure. Is such a listing available on the Internet? Sure would be handy dandy.....for us parts sharks trolling the Pull-n-Save lots for that special bargain...! I would even place that data in the "Official Metro Parts Mail Order list" at the top of this Forum for everybody's FYI !!! DoctorBill

the 89-95 3 cyl metro engines all interchange, you just need to swap the intakes and brackets as needed. 96 and newer have a crank angle sensor built into the oil pump so if you have a 96 or newer you will need a 96 or newer engine or older engine with a newer style oil pump

thats interesting, so from what you say I could take a 1.0 out of a newer Metro, like a 1996-2000something ( do they still use the engine in anything new? ), and put it straight into my 92 with maybe only some differences in wiring?
I am just curious if this is possible, what with the supply of good older engines dwindling. |

im not sure on the engines after 97, you would have to do some research. you can still buy a jdm import engine from japan, supply of those doesn't seem to be drying up yet

I spent, if I remember right, the following:
Head rebuild at a local shop $240 after taxes. Included a complete gasket set. I would not try to do that job myself, if I were you.... Rings were $50 from Schucks. New Head Bolts were $35 from Schucks. New Rod Bearings were $45 from Schucks. New Pan Gasket was around $15 - can't remember that part well..... Renting a Ridge Reamer from a local rental place $25. Buying various things like a cylinder hone, tools, RTV Silicone etc which I didn't have was maybe $40.....but then I went apeshit...(!) I love buying tools! I also did a new Timing Belt for $30. It came out about $450 all totaled. Crvett69 says he can get the Japanese Engines for about $350 or so. It is a philosophical difference. I like to know what is in the engine. Crvett69 likes to replace it in toto. So far, I have been lucky. My rings are sealing so tight that the oil hardly looks used after 3,000 miles. I am getting 49.5 mpg now regularly. I still keep wondering if the engine won't blow up for some dufus thing I may have done while rebuilding it. I keep hoping the Rod Bearings were torqued down w/o error. I try to imagine what I may have done wrong.... But after about 8,000 miles on my rebuild now, I guess it is OK (Knock on wood). I screwed around and took my time. If one were to work on the engine in an expeditious manner, I would imagine 3 or 4 days work would get it accomplished. I did mine out in the dirt beside my driveway. Do it inside a nice garage if you can pull that off. Buy a Chilton or Haynes Manual if you don't have one. Gas Tank replacement, Front Wheel Bearing replacement, messing with the Throttle Body, the Injector, the Distributor, door replacement after someone backed into me, etc etc. Hope my experiences and picture taking while doing the repairs helps someone. FWIW - I have observed that the head and block from all the 3-cyl G10 metros I have (93-2000) are the same regadless of emissions and computer systems. Now, the head and block are identical across the board, however, as mentioned above, things like the oil pump, oil pan, thermostat housing, intake manifold and exhaust manifolds do have variations with OBD I/II. The cams vary also (someone wanna elaborate for me?), but otherwise they're all the same animal.
