My parents are catholic, one of my two sisters is catholic, we were all raised catholic, i haven't been catholic for over a year and a half. for the past 1.5-2 years i've pretty much been acting like a catholic but i haven't believed, and there's a very good reason for that. today i finally got fed up with it and decided to let my parents know before mass that i wasn't going to go and that i'm not catholic. i started by telling my dad, he gave me the old "if you want to live in this house you go to church" then i told my mom once my dad got into the car because i guess he didn't tell her, she got emotional and started saying stuff like "all my children have respected that i believe that a family is blessed when they go to church together" "all you need to give is one hour of your week to reflect on why you've fallen so far from god".

now the reason i didn't tell them until now and why i was going to wait until i moved out (which i'm doing this school year) is because i knew my parents would get upset, i knew my mom would get emotional and i knew it would be impossible to have an intellectual conversation with my mom because she's so dilusional with her faith that she can't accept anything else. she's pretty much the epitome of a brainwashed christian. I'm not saying that you can't be christian without being dilusional, just that she is.

now i've proven what i told all my friends when they told me to tell them (alot of my friends have told me to tell my parents that i'm not catholic for a while now) because i quoted above reasons when explaining why i would wait until i moved out to tell them. the thing i hate about religion is that when it takes over someone's mind, it does more damage then good. i know plenty of christians and people of other religions who do it right but my mom is just fucking unbelieveable

So when you're not Catholic, you don't capitalize your sentences and stuff?

Because that explains a lot on the forums - but does that mean I'm Catholic?

Anyways, after they got back from church we had a long chat and they were being more reasonable than I expected. Everything went well and I don't think they're going to force me to go to church or anything and they're going to respect my beliefs (or lack thereof).

Have you considered trying a church other than catholic? Maybe you would enjoy going to church if it was a church or religeon that wasn't forced upon you.

That's just my opinion. Do what you want with it.

I think religion is something that you have to choose.

BB, I'm probably the perfect person to respond to this thread.

I was raised Catholic, had to attend church every weekend (we went on Saturday evenings), Sunday school or as in the Catholic church CCE every week. If I didn't go on Saturday, you bet your ass my parents were dropping me off the next morning, or driving myself once I was old enough.

I never paid attention to hardly anything in CCE. Usually just goofed off or made fun of people. The usual childhood antics. In 7th/8th grade my friend had a remote watch and we actually had the CCE teacher freaking out b/c the movie we were watching kept fastforwarding, rewinding, stopping, so on. She eventually caught on, I believe someone ratted us out. We got chewed out and pretty much were told we were going to hell. Of course we just and thought she was

I'm rambling. When I began confirmation classes is when I really began to question everything. I found I believed in God w/o a shadow of a doubt, but questioned all organized religions.

X number of kids were in one class with the two fun guys, and the others (me) were with the boring guy and his daughter. He didn't believe in any of our input or a fun teaching method. Well a friend of mine and I got kicked out for "being loud", when everyone else was talking just as much. I went home and just went on a rampage with my parents.

I just came out with it and said I don't even know if I want to be Catholic, and what if I marry someone from a different religion that I like better, and how much I can't stand the teacher. My mom didn't like hearing me say that I didn't want to be Catholic. Yelled at me and such. The parents ended up meeting with the teacher, to my surprise they agreed with me that he was not a nice guy so to speak, and they didn't like his attitude they had when they met with him.

I got switched to the other class and that was that, and I was confirmed. Once I went to college I quit going to church. I do still go on Christmas and Easter. My dad told me he quit going to church when he moved out of the house too. Said he didn't go until he got married (if I remember correctly). I think he's finally helped my mom realize I'm my own person and I have my own beliefs and reasons for not going.

I feel ya man. It's not easy to feel that pressure to go to church.

By the way is part of your issue questioning God, or just disagreeing with organized religion? Just remember I think we've all been there.

I could tell you some pretty funny stories from the confirmation camps. Okay, so may not be that funny to others, but if you were there it was good times.

i guess im pretty much like texas here. i was raised catholic and all that jazz. i told them basically after confermation, to go to hell, since that is what you are scared of. dont force me to do something that i dont want to do. i diddnt pick religion, and isnt that the point of it? so what is the point of doing hail mary's?

well, my parents trued to get me to go after i confermed. pretty much diddnt work for them. and i dont go to this day. sometimes xmas and easter, but thats about it. i have my own beliefs.
