Replacing the rockers

Hey

I'm not very experienced with internal engine parts or repair because I like to keep my engines sealed :P. I have a 2000 impala 3.8L. The mechanic is speculating that a random misfire during idle (but not during high RPM) is due to worn rockers. I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt because I'm running out of options for this misfire issue... My question is, how much would it cost to replace the rockers and how hard is it? What time would it take and what tools would I need? Is this something that I should leave to a mechanic?

Re: Replacing the rockers

It takes a few sockets and a rachet. Rockers don't wear out, they bend or break. And, if it were a rocker problem it wouldn't be simply at one RPM range. Chances are it would be worse at higher RPMs.

Its more likely a valve seal or ring seal issue.

Replacing rockers is a pretty easy job. Grab a shop manual for your car. It will be a $15 investment that will save you thousands.

Re: Replacing the rockers

Thanks for the reply curtis, I appreciate it.

How about the seals and rings? How pricey or hard would it be to replace those? I'm just trying to lay down my options, either fixing this engine myself or get the mechanic to swap it because he'll guarantee his work.

Re: Replacing the rockers

I'd be cautious with this mechanic I have never heard of this recommendation for an idle misfire, if they were worn enough to cause any noticeable performance issue there would be plenty of noise. This problem needs additional diagnosis such as pinpointing the suspect cylinder/s to start with.
