3.0 Knocking
I just replaced the head gaskets on a 94 Plymouth Voyager with the SOHC 3.0 V6 with 149k miles. I got it back together and running, but now it has a knock. It is proportional to engine speed. I can't tell if it is something in the valvetrain or if it is a rod that is knocking. Before I replaced the head gaskets it was running and there was no knock. I have never worked on an OHC engine before. I am not familiar with valvetrain noises in this type of engine. Does anyone have an idea what this could be? Or how I can determine what it might be?

Re: 3.0 Knocking
Sounds like you could have got the timing belt off a tooth on one of the heads.

Re: 3.0 Knocking
That maybe could be. I tried to be very careful putting everything back together. All of the marks lined up after I put the belt back on. Would the belt being off a tooth make it run rough or miss or something? It runs as smooth as can be. If that is the problem, what would be making the noise? What would be making it knock? What is loose or what is hitting what? I am trying to find out everything I can before I tear it apart. I don't want to tear it apart if I don't have to.

Re: 3.0 Knocking
I would just try to take the top cover off and confirm you got the timing marks right one more time. Yes, it should run not as smooth as before, but knocking???? You didn't change anything that should knock as far as a bad cam or spun bearing. So it must be the firing that's knocking.

Re: 3.0 Knocking
Yeah, it is resolved. I think it was just a stuck lifter. I isolated the noise to the top of the engine. Then I took the valve covers off to check everything out. I checked the lifters like the Haynes manual said and they all checked out fine. The manual calls them hydraulic lash adjusters. I put it back together and the knock was still there. After that I decided to take it for a little drive down the road. Went about five miles with it and when I pulled it back in the garage it was quiet as could be. I guess I got a little lucky, but I am glad it was nothing serious. I have put about 75-100 miles on it and no problems so far.
