vibration w/new mud tires

I just bought new tires (thorns) and there is a vibration at 60-70KMH. Is this normal? It seems to shake the whole truck. The tire shop said it was balanced and aligned (actually twice). Still the same. Any recommedations on how to eliminate this problem.

Go to another shop.

Where did you buy your tires, and what type/size did you get? There are many factors that can be involved.

those tires have big chunks of rubber that stick out past the side wall. imo, i would expect alot of vibration.

Why would big lugs sticking out cause vibration? We're not talking about road noise vibration, but the type of vibration from a poorly balanced wheel/tire setup.

Let me be the first to say "We told you so" :hehehe:

But since you went ahead and bought the Turds you should realise they are a pain in the ass to balance. The large lug Swampers have a lot of weight at the outside of the tire. Some shops can balance them under pressure to simulate road weight, others can patch-balance the tire by balancing them with weight near the outside of the tire instead of rim weights.

You never said where you bought them.

Aren't thornturds a bias ply tire? Bias ply tires can flat spot overnight and also tend to be harder to balance and generally rough riding. Also make sure that the shop know that Xterra wheels are not hubcentric. They need to be balanced with a stud adapter. Costco made that mistake with mine and Les Schwab picked up on it right away.

I hate to say it though, but we told you so. Thornbirds suck.

They should balance the tires with an adapter that fits in the stud holes. Many shops will use a cone adapter to balanced based on the hole in the wheel for the hub. Since nissan wheels are not hub-centric, they should be balaced by the stud holes. Les Schwab here in Washington had no problems balancing mine in this fashion after getting the balanced unsuccessfully twice at Costco.

I have also heard that swampers are often much more difficult to balance than other brands.
