metallic paint

Hey guys, I am going to paint my corvette c6 with red metal flake paint and was wondering if I need an undercoat for it like with candy colors or do I just spray it over primer? Also is there a special way to apply metallic colors?

Yes.

Make sure you give each coat time to gas out.

PRIMER EVERYTHING, using a good quality primer (krylon and wal-mart brands suck)

most all of your metallic colors will be partially transparent, so a base coat will be necessary. remember this, also, the color you choose for your base coat will effect your top color. ie., if you use a silver base with your metallic red, you will get a bright red. if you use yellow, the red will look more orange. blue base yields a purpley red. so on, so on.

Anyone? Oh yeah I've decided on painting gunmetal for the base coat as I am doing a darker red.

gunmetal would make a great base for red. I'd go as thin as you can on the base coats, but make it as opaque as possible without building up to much paint (thin, very thin coats). you will need to apply several coats of red to make it look more red than purple, but it really depends on the type of paint you are using. you will be able to tell if it is building up quickly, or if it will take more coats to get your desired shade.

Since we're on the topic of metallic paint, I also have a question.
I have the Tamiya TS-19 metallic blue paint, how will it turn out if I just spray it over the white Tamiya primer? Do I NEED another color in between those two colors?

a white base would make a fine base for a metallic blue. it will come out nice and bright. if you want to know for sure what it will look like just shoot a little blue onto some white plastic, or use a scrap body and shoot some white primer, then the blue just as you would if you were painting any other project. I have about 30 scrap bodies that I try out new techniques and color tests. then I just dunk them in some CSC or dot 3 to see if it will strip, should I botch a paint job. incedentaly that is how I ended up with so many scrap bodies....botched paint jobs that wouldn't strip.

OR you could just use some plastic spoons.
