server and network questions...

I want to set up a file share/dedicated server. what I want to do, is hook it up through an existiing pc. So i have one network allready, and just want to add another pc through mine. From what I understand, its posible, but no one can tell me how or what its called. How would I do this? If anyone is confused on what I'm trying to do, Ill have a pic of the setup later.

Re: server and network questions...

Ok, here is a pic of what I want to do...
- maybe copy and paste.
Would I just use a crossover cable to go from pc to server? And then turn on internet sharing?

edit: fixed your code

Re: server and network questions...

Does the server have to connect thru your PC?

If you can connect the server directly to your router you can simply enable folder sharing to share files:
1) On your computer called "Server" right click on the folder you want to share
2) Select properties then click the sharing tab
3) Enable sharing and give the folder a share name

Then from your "Other PC" browse the network neighborhood, search the entire network for the PC called "Server" and open it. You should see the shared folder there. You can map a permanent drive to it so you don't have to search every time.

If it asks for a userid and password you must create a user account on "Server" with the same userid and password you use to login to "Other PC".

I'm not sure if a crossover cable and ICS will work, it might. But either way you do it you'll have to enable folder sharing.

I'm assuming all PC's will be running some version of Windows for workstations, not Windows server right? If your "Server" pc is really running Windows server it's a whole different ballgame.

Re: server and network questions...

question 1:

In networking terms a "regular pc" is referred to as a workstation. As I said earlier I assume you're not running any version of Windows server right? Just some version of XP Home or XP Professional?

Re: server and network questions...

i was asking him because it would help understand what it is exactly that he wants to do. As you pointed out, if that machine is connected to the router, all he has to do is enable file sharing.

Just wait for Oz to see this thread, but explain again in detail what you want to do.

Yes. I can't run a wire from the router to it. And I'm not spending more money for a wireless card.

From what I understand a file share/print server, its a computer that allows you to share and print files from many computers. A didicated server alows other people to play a game through it, it hosts a game. Thanks for fixing the code for the pic, what did I do wrong? And it wont be there in a few months cuz I dont know how long myweb site will last, I get it free from the state.

Both computers will be running XP Pro. I want to use it for file sharing and game hosting. Its going to be my old 900MHz PIII. Hopefully it will run ok. Ive got other hard drives than the 120 that was in it, I think 3 total will be installed once set up. Im setting this up next week once I get moved into the other room in my house. I thought file sharing was enabled by default in XP, but I could be wrong. If i were to get internet, how would I do that?

No comment. Anyone who works in IT should be able to work it out.

This is possibly the stupidest thread in the history of the Computers/Electronics/Technology forum.

There are a million resources on the internet you can research yourself.

Fucktard.

I searched, didnt find much. I don't know a lot about servers and what things like what I'm trying to do would be called. If you have a problem with my posts or questions, don't reply, that simple. I respect that you're a mod, but still, all your posts are mostly negative.

Re: server and network questions...

Instead of asking people who know what they're talking about how to do something, you tell us what you want to do then ask why it's all going to shit?

Usually you suggest the least logical method imagineable, that no one has tried or tested before because it's a stupid way to do things. You never show that you've researched anything outside AF, you usually say "I researched it, and it was all crap".

Then there's the fact you've "worked in IT" for several months.

So first you lie to us, then you're so arrogant that you make out that you've already worked out the solution, and you just need a few pointers on implementing it.

What do you expect us to say?

If it was me, I'd probably just plug the file server straight into the router using CAT5 cable.

You fucktard.

"My parents won't let me"

"A new wireless card costs too much"

That's how you do it, but it's still a stupid, stupid idea. Your file server will be reliant on your desktop PC.

which kinda renders the point of having a dedicated server redundent.
that's I asked if he knew what a "server" is.
