WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

Here is my new project to help me keep my sanity while I am fiddling with a few 1/43 builds.

I am in the process of building a Ford Escort run by the Australian Ford team in 1979 which they had Bjorn Waldegard and Hans Thorzelius as guests in one of their 3 Escorts. Waldegard lead for a long time but retired with diff trouble.

A fellow member on here (more in the bike section) Rod, is in the process of getting decals done in both 1/24 and 1/43. He originally asked about this car late last year in the following thread where you can see photos of the car.

http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...southern+cross

The first shot shows the plainness of the Aussie interiors. All black with black belts. The seats should be the same as Puffry's build. I just went with the kit seats for simplicity. Can anyone pick something that is not quite right in how the interior looks?

In the back is the body after a quick sand and partial polish. Note the bonnet has had the central crease sanded right down as it only had a slight curve to it. Not the distinct bend as per the kit.

In the second shot I have tried to show the modification to the rear arch.(Will get a better shot in the daylight tomorrow). The Aussie cars had the extension finishing just below the panel line unlike the European ones and kit. As the kit in this area is very thick, I could file away the arch until it was the correct size without the use of filler. Once I was close, wet and dry sandpaper was used. The yellow is a Ford automotive paint called Pine'N'Lime which was a standard Escort colour here in Aust. This has a slight green tinge to it when placed next to a normal yellow. Another Ford colour 'Signal Yellow' is close without the green tinge.

thanks for looking

Mal

Wowoww, a great escort is coming here !
Will follow that closely.

Did Ari Vatanen drive this car, too ?

If yes a 1/43 decal would interest me much.

Nice start, Malscar. I really like your rally builds. Will be looking forward to more updates on this one. Nice work on the seatbelts, also.

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

I hate modelling. Looked at the colour again and decided the yellow had too much of a green tinge in it. Stripped and painted in the signal yellow I mentioned above.

Then late one night I was watching some reruns on TV of the Aussie Castrol Rally in which these cars ran. I had the correct colour the first time. Grrrr, took ages to find more of the correct colour, stripped the body, repainted it and then dropped it while wet. Lots of sanding, painting later I was able to lay the first decals. These are the main stripes on the side. Clear coated over this so they match the real car. All other decals will be laid over this and not clear coated. This way they will represent the way the car had sponsor stickers and signwriting added on top of the paintwork. There was always a slight difference in surface shine.

For anyone trying to get the correct colour, it is Holt's Duplicolor Auto Spray - DSF37 Ford Pine'N'Lime.

I will need to leave the body for a few weeks to fully dry/harden so I can then mask, then paint the matt black sill panels, rear spoiler and rear valance panel.

Knowing nothing of this car, I find every update very interesting. Looking forward to the final body process and wheels. Looks great so far with this livery.

2nd that. I love the look of theses older rally cars though. They look tough and ready to me. I have seen a few here and there on Speed, but I know nothing about them. Hmmmmmm, I gues I do have that thing called the inernet to look stuff up. lol

I've been waiting for your progress report. Sounds like you had a few dramas. It should be plain sailing from here. Yeah Right, like you say modelling can be painful at times.

Looking very good.

I've got a couple of sets of this scheme coming and can't wait to get started. Thanks for the paint reference.

Keep up the progress posts I look forward to seeing the finished article.

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

Thanks guys. Here is a quick update. The decal sheet includes the black for the lower doors and the rear valance. Originally I was going to paint them however decided to try the decals. The rear valance which also goes around the rear lights surprised me as I had no dramas.

The quality of these decals is up there with Cartograph. Very little softener was used. I do suggest that the first decal you should put on is the black strip for the rear valance. The lower red side stripe should line up with the black surrounding the tail lights. Should have thought that out as the right hand side is not as accurate as I would like.

The door number is slightly thin so next time I would use a white square underneath. Still a ways to go on the detail painting and a few more decals.

Just a heads up, the 1/43 sheets are nearly here with the Jemmpy Escort being used. Have already ordered mine.

Still think that this is one of the better schemes seen on the old Esky.

Hi Phil

Ari drove this car the following year.

As to a 1/43 decal. I have just received a email from Dave at www.automodellistudio.com Dave is now taking orders for the kit & decals at AUD75. These are for the Waldegard car. I know the 1/24 decals are for sale through Wong at Mediamix so assume he will be selling the 1/43 version as well.

If anyone would like a set of either scale, www.raggededgedesigns.com sell them retail as well. BTW Dave in Victoria should have his tomorrow, Wong, mentioned only has the 1/24 so far.

Rod.

Re: WIP - Ford Escort - Waldegard 1979

Malscar

FYI

Photos of one of the works cars in this colour scheme, as it is in a private collection there in Oz now, are in the April 2007 edition of Classic Ford magazine, which has just become available here in New Zealand. I would assume that it will be on the shelves in Australia too either now or shortly.

Pages 123, 124 & 125, include engine bay (BDG), boot, dash and interior shots

I'm looking forward to the pictures of your finished model. I haven't had time to start mine. Check out ebay user pyperhound for resin left hand drive dash, minilites and correct forest tyres (tyre / wheels cast in one).
