WIP: Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 Competizione

Doesn't time fly when your working all hours and can't even think about building models... nearly 8 months since my last thread but hopefully I now have a bit more time to get back to the desk and start building again for a while, I have sorely missed it I can tell you.

So anyway, time to jump back into GT Racing and also into an Uber Full Detail build with Tamiya's F40 kit. I have done the usual and picked up far too many detail sets but as that is par for the course with me I'm not grumbling! The build will hopefully be along the same lines as my Porsche 911 & 917 builds with just as much detail.

No other reason to build this apart from the fact that I really liked the colour scheme and it has a fully detailed engine, which allows for much more detail work than the half engined efforts you get with most WRC kits nowadays.

The kit also has an opening rear hood which is perfect to show all the extra work on the engine I intend to do. The jury is out on wether to open the doors or not - I'm going to have a think and see how easy it will be.

So off we go... here's the box and detail parts...

and my references so far...

The 'World's Great Marques' and Ferrrari F40' Books are particularly excellent for reference pictures, especially of the engine bay, chassis, suspension and engine itself and have given me many visual aides to significantly increase the details on the engine.

I will of course add the usual progress pics as and when I can, oh any hints on locations of reference pics for the actual Marco Brand 'Monte Shell' car will be most appreciated.

Thats a great kit, Looking forward to seeing your progress!!

One thing, cut the locating pins off the body that mate the body & chassis & your rear hatch should close better than mine!!

Good Luck!!

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 Competizione

First update...

Engine. The main transmission whilst being well detailed is lacking the bolt heads which are very prominent in some place which join the various sections of the trans and engine block. I used RB Motion brass bolts in various sizes for these. For paint I primed the whole unit in grey and then gave a couple of washes of a very dark grey/brown colour. Once this was dry I gave it a dry brushing with Matt Aluminium. The 1:1 unit does not have any gloss to it and is a very matt plain finish, whilst I wanted this to look realistic, it did need the extra shadow/highlights adding just to bring it life.

I also added a hose that sits on the right side of the heads and added the grilled square base that sits under the oil filter. This was actually a spare from the etch box which used to be a brake pedal.

Started detailing the starter motor unit, there's still more to add here...

I decided that the exhaust support frame ont he back of the trans is way too thick, I removed this and replaced with some think metal wire. I also added another hose to the rear of the unit.

Finally, I have also added the gear linkage which runs all the way down the lower left side of the engine...

a couple of refence photos I found show the very matt looking trans...

thanks for following, more to come soon

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 Competizione

a little more progress...

more details added to the engine, a hose which attaches to the assembly by the oil filter and runs down the left handside of the engine, a couple of hose ends to the top of the trans...

and I rebuilt the belts and such on the front of the motor, including the alternator which is basic on the Tamiya part...

I still have more details to be added to the engine yet but it's beginning to take shape, thanks for following

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 Competizione

Moved on to the rear suspension/brakes/drive shafts...

this little lot ended up looking like this...

I used the excellent Hobby Design detail set for the brake discs and calipers, I also added the handbrake caliper which are missing from the Tamiya kit using bits from the spares box. The suspension units are from Top Studio. Another one of these to do now.

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 Competizione

a little further progress...

turned my attention to the exhausts, the fit seemed good and all that was needed here was to add a couple of details to the rear section (possibly sensors on the 1:1 car). These were then sprayed matt alu with the end section getting a little darker colour and with some dark washes.

Moving onto the top section of the engine which includes the turbos and exhausts. The turbo units themselves were lacking in detail and rather than completely rebuild them I decided just to add some 'ridges' using halved plastic wire covering around the edge of each unit. I will add some plumbing to these as eacgh turbo unit has three main hoses leading from it.

This was then primed and sprayed and I am now starting to add the details to this. The top pipes above the engine I have kept matt grey as my reference seem to show this not to be a metallic finish at all, I have added some wash and dry brushing to this just to add a little depth. The are some etched fasteners to go onto the red connectors and an etched Ferrari badge to sit over the moulded letters. At the front of this unit there is also some hoses to connect up to the main engine.

The main engine section now looks like this... beginning to look a little more busy as it should compared to the kit version...

more to come soon again hopefully

Re: WIP: Tamiya 1/24 Ferrari F40 Competizione

Nearly there with the motor now. Most of the assembly is finished with only the coolors to add. I decided that the Turbo Waste Gate unit that sits on the top of the engine was lacking in detail compared to the 1:1 car and because it is so prominent it needed re-doing...

details were made from plastic card and the bolts were from zip tie wire and fuse wire coiled around the zip tie wire. Other bolts are from RB Motion...

With everything in place the motor is now almost complete, I have added the plug leads to one side and also some anodised hoses that sit at the front on the motor, these were all scratch made...

thanks for all your kind comments, more coming soon
