Emissions Warranty Ext. 14yr/150k
On some 95-97 vehicles, the emissions warranty has been extended to 14yrs/150,000 miles as part of a settlement with CARB/EPA. You should have gotten a letter about this last fall, if you have a covered vehicle. Owners get a free ignition system tune-up between 75k and 150k miles as part of this, and a free oil change.
If you have ever changed your plugs/wires/cap/rotor yourself with aftermarket (non OEM) parts, and you go in to a honda dealer to get the work done, there is a good chance that he'll tell you that he can't do it under the warranty because the parts are not OEM. He may even "offer" to charge you for the work & put on OEM parts, so that some other time you can come in and get the free change. A perfect example of how car dealers will try to screw you at every turn (especially in the service department). Don't take this crap. Remember, the settlement said that Honda will "provide a free tune up between 75,000 and 150,000 miles of use, [to owners of applicable vehicles] at a cost to Honda of at least $250,000 million." This isn't a favor that they're doing for you out of the goodness of their hearts, that they can just decide not to do. Call the Honda customer service people at 1-800-999-1009 and ask them what to do. In my case, they said to go ahead and pay for the service, then file a claim for reimbursement with their claims department (takes 4-6 weeks). They affirmed that the replacement IS covered even though the parts are not stock. For further info, try the following websites: http://www.usdoj.gov/opa/pr/1998/June/264enr.htm.html http://www.4acura.com/service/updates/98-031.asp http://world.honda.com/news/1998/c980609.html Additional service provided by Honda As part of the settlement, Honda has agreed to perform two special services to your vehicle: Honda dealers will inspect your vehicle's emission control system while it is in the mileage range of 50,000 to 75,000 miles. This inspection will ensure that your emission control system is performing properly. Any necessary repairs to the emission control system (including parts and labor) will be performed free of charge. In the mileage range of 75,000 to 150,000 miles, Honda dealers will replace certain emission components in your vehicle free of charge. These components include spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap, and rotor. A free oil and oil filter change will also be part of this one-time service, but remember--your vehicle is not eligible until it has reached 75,000 miles. At the time of this service, the OBD system will be inspected again and any necessary repairs performed free of charge. It is recommended that you have this one-time service performed in conjunction with the scheduled maintenance at 90,000 miles (refer to your owner's manual).
