1983 944-nonturbo, grinding rear?

Hi,
When you're starting out in first gear, especially around corners, there seem to be grinding ine the rear. This is the only time it happens.
Also, sometimes after we been driving for awhile(mostly on the highway)we start to smell gasoline. Any ideas why?
thanks for any replys and your time.

That's weird. I get a grinding type nose when I turn the car on. I only smell the gas when I make sharp fast left turns. Does your E-Brake work?

Have you tried changing the gear oil? This can often make a huge difference.

If the problem is only in first, it stands to reason something is wrong with the first gear gearset. It's not while shifting, which is odd, that's usually where you run into grinding, when the synchros are worn down.

Sonny7, as for the banging, check that the torque tube and the transmission are securely bolted down. If they're fairly loose, it could just be moving around a little.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but Rennlist is the place to ask tech questions
