I have to disagree with Taranaki (sorry T, it doesn't happen very often). It WON'T turn up in Australia but it will turn up in New Zealand probably as a second-hand import.

Our LTSA (Land Transport Safety Authority) has already approved the importation of several flood damaged vehicles that were written off by Japanese insurance companies.

Apparently, NZ has the expertise that is appears to be lacking in Japan to successfully repair the flood damage to a vehicle. This is despite the fact there are no documented procedures to assess or repair the multitude of active and passive safety, electronic, mechanical and structural (incl corrosion protection) systems that could be damaged by flood damage.

Understandably, several manufacturers are concerned about the LTSA's decision and even more concerned about the reputation of their vehicles when the inevitable happens and some unsuspecting buyer ends up with a lemon or worse still is killed or injured by the failure of one of these waterlogged death traps.

Oh well on the other hand, it reminds me of watching some tourists drive off Devonport when I was a kid. They started their manual rental in gear and went straight over the side into the Harbor.
