Bimmer vs. MX-5

Wow, it's been years since I've posted in here.

As of late, I've become a suspension freak, so most of my competition happens in corners, not straight lines. However, my friend's 1997 Miata can give me a run for my money in curves or a straight line... We went from a dig, I hooked a little better than him, and it seemed he would pull through
the midrange while I would pull through the top end. I nudged him out by about 3/4 car at around 80 mph. From a roll, I once again nudged him out by about 1/2 carlength...but he was much too close for comfort.

His car/mods:
  • 1997 Mazda Miata 1.8L
    Racing Beat Intake
    Headers
    Borla Exhaust
    Underdrive pulleys
    Sways

My car/mods:
  • 1992 BMW 325is 2.5L
    K&N Panel Filter
    Deleted Cats
    H&R suspension

Re: Bimmer vs. MX-5

it is surprising that a mazda ca stay with u, but it's not surprising that he can stay with u in corners, mx-5 handling is amazing for the price of them

Re: Bimmer vs. MX-5

I do not get why everyone is so surprised that the Miata can not stay with him. It is an entry level Bimmer and the Miata has BPU. They are both nice cars but neither drag monsters.

Re: Bimmer vs. MX-5

Good kill. The Mazdaspeed MX-5 is pretty quick, and i've thought about getting one. The N/A version you ran is ok, but not that powerful top end wise.

Time to start modding your car power wise. I'm sure you can find a cheap s/c kit for that car.

It's in the works. An S50 (M3) motor with bolt-ons would put me in the high 13-second territory. I just gotta find a wrecked M3...

thats what i've been wanting to do for quite some time, but im lookin for an s52, (e46) motor but they are impossible to find... i got a question though, as far as my experience goes, my first and second gear are strong as all hell but it seems like every race im in third gear is an absolute slouch, i raced one of the new SI's at the track back in october and pulled hard on him through first and second but it seemed like thrid gear he gained WAY more than he should have, and then fourth has power like 1st and 2nd. so i dunno have you felt anything like that?

The S52 was on the E36 M3, not the E46. The E46 (as well as the Z4M cars) has the S54. But you are right in saying that these engines are hard to come by. You would probably have better luck finding a S52 and supercharging it then looking for a S54. You don't see a whole lot of E36s with the newer engine, although I believe its been done.

btw. rumor is that we'll see the E92 M3, at least as a pre-production concept in either March or April this year. Now the question will be whether you want a twin-turbo I6 or a high revving V8 in your 3-series
