Looting in England
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_pictures/6289067.stm
Apparently people in Devon, England are starting to loot the containers that washed up on shore when this ship got beached. ![]() People are finding all sorts of things, including diapers, brand new BMW M5 steering wheels, and even new motorcycles. ![]() ![]() According to my local news, people pretty much spent the whole night looting, and slowed or stopped(in some areas) in the morning when cops decided to start cracking down. ![]() Find anything good 2.2?

Re: Looting in England
As usual, it's a small minority getting all the publicity for taking advantage of the misfortune of others. There seems to be little coverage for the volunteers and professionals who are currently hard at work to minimise the effects of this stranding. The latest coverage said that the beach had been closed off because organised gangs were moving in and breaking open undamaged containers. The police were blamed for not closing the beach sooner, but under standing law they cannot act until the Receiver of Wrecks asks them to step in. Legally, anyone recovering goods washed ashore from a wreck is obliged to notify the owners and hold such goods until the owner decides what to do. On a vessel such as this carrying hundreds of containers belonging to multiple owners, the receiver of wrecks cannot act on the owners' behalf until he has a copy of the ship's manifest, which details the cargo and it's rightful owners.

Interesting points Taranaki. Are you quoting international or British law? I recall a law, well perhaps a tradition, that goods washed up from a shipwreck could be recovered by anyone. Perhaps until the police are called in, as in this case?
