The more times you post, the more stars you get. Doesn't really serve a purpose, but certain people feel better about themselves if they have more stars, which causes some people to engage in behaviour commonly refferred to as "post whoring". "post whoring" is when you post over and over again (usually with useless information) in order to achieve a higher post-count...
I've heard it said that it's not the quantity of your posts that matter, it's the quality of the posts...
